The 4A state champion indoors in the 3200 (PR of 9:21), Walz is also the fastest returnee in Maryland from the state cross country meet and NXN Southeast last fall with a 15:28 5K PR in XC.
2
The top returnee for the 3-time 3A state champs and 2-time NXN qualifiers, Forsyth has the fastest 5K PR in the state after running 15:17 on the track in the spring and chopped over 20 seconds off his 3200 PR as well down to 9:32.
3
A 17-time state champion in the smallest classification, Ty Franks has owned 1A for the first 3 years of high school. Will get head-to-head opportunities to test himself against the other top runners in the state? Ended his outdoor season with two PR's including a 9:37 3200 and is the third fastest returnee from last year's state XC meet.
4
Arguably the top underclassmen distance runner last year in Maryland, Asfaw will be competing for the Montgomery County title this fall after running sub 16 for 5K and 9:23 for 3200 meters as a sophomore.
5
One of the nation's fastest freshmen milers last year (4:18 PR) who nearly made the U.S. team for World Youth Championships at 1500m, Hengst will look to make the sophomore leap this fall. Figures to compete for the MIAA title and continue to drop his 15:54 5K PR this season.
6
The defending WCAC champ and DC/Maryland private school champ in XC, Wavering leads a deep and talented Good Counsel squad with hopes of being the top team in Maryland. 5K PR of 15:42 from Paul Short and finished high in many top invites last fall at Glory Days and Great Meadow Invite.
7
The second fastest returnee from the 2014 state cross country meet at Hereford, Abebe runs his best in the fall. A champion in the varsity B race last year at Oatlands as well as the 3A West Regional champ. Worked his 3200m time down to 9:44 this spring and will aim to break 16 minutes for first time this fall.
8
McGivern was actually the better Good Counsel runner over his teammate Weavering in the spring claiming the WCAC 1600 meter title. Also ran under 16 minutes last fall at Paul Short and was a runner-up at the WCAC XC Championships in 2014.
9
The top returnee for Severna Park from Nike Cross Nationals might have the weakest track PR's on the list at 4:45 for 1600 and 9:54 for 3200 in his limited races. But when it comes to cross country, Tucker is a different animal having run 15:51 at NXN Southeast last November and already opened at 16:19 in a scrimmage 5K this month.
10
Bennet had only run as fast as 16:46 last cross country season, but showed during track that he will be blowing that time out of the water very early on running 4:20 for 4th place in the 4A state outdoor 1600 race along with a 9:32 3200. Bennett also ran a sub 16 minute 5K on the track at the Seahawk Invite.
11
The fourth private school runner on the list, Legambi also leads one of the top returning teams this fall at Loyola-Blakefield and will compete with Hengst for the MIAA conference title. Legambi dipped just under 16 minutes for 5K at Paul Short and clocked a 9:43 3200 in the spring.
12
Like Severna Park's Tucker, Tilson doesn't have impressive track times and credentials (4:44 1600) but cannot overlook his runner-up state meet finish last year at Hereford in the 2A race with a time of 16:41, which is 7th fastest among all state meet returnees.
13
One of the top returning runners from Montgomery County, Quince Orchard's Walsh hovered in the low 16's for much of last fall and turned in a fast 1600m PR this spring of 4:24.
14
Fairly similar times and finishes to Walsh above him, Kannapell leads a strong Bethesda-Chevy Chase squad with his 16:04 5K PR.
15
Gersch takes over the lead runner role from graduated state champ Evan Woods at Whitman after breaking through in the spring with a 9:39 3200 PR for 8th place in the 4A outdoor state race.

Our All-Maryland preseason boys individual cross country rankings poll has been released. While Ty Franks may have won our fan vote for preseason #1 boys ranking yesterday, it was not enough to sway our decision to give the nod to Dulaney's Eric Walz as the Maryland's top ranked runner heading in the cross country season. Walz is the state's fastest returnee from last fall and also top returning 3200 meter performer at 9:21. Franks starts out back in the #3 spot, despite having won a total of 17 state titles competing in the state's small classification of 1A. Severna Park's Andrew Forsyth breaks the pair up in the #2 spot having the fastest actual 5K PR in the state with a 15:17 run on the track in the spring. Montgomery County public schools (5) and the state's private schools (4) are well represented on our top 15 preseason list.
