Vote below for Maryland's Week #5 Boys XC Runner of the Week from the October 1st week of meets. This week's batch of nominees includes Riverdale Baptist's Anthony Gordon, McDonogh's Dalton Hengst, Smithsburg's Will Merritt, Century's Jacob Spera and Linganore's Micah Hewitson.

Smithsburg's Will Merritt had an excellent week of racing, pulling a rare double at two invitationals: the Progressive Therapy XC Invitational on Tuesday and the Don Stoner Invitational on Saturday. On Tuesday he beat possibly his number one challenger in the 1A classification in Southern Garrett's Declan Horner by nine seconds. His win on Saturday was a bit more comfortable - he cruised on his home course to a win by nearly a minute.

The fastest time of the weekend, however, belonged to McDonogh's Dalton Hengst. He went for the win in the boys brown race at the Paul Short Run, and even though he fell a bit short (fourth-place finish) he earned himself a new personal best of 15:27. His performance moved him to number 2 on this season's state rankings, and the number 1 mark set by Jay Hall was run on the 3.07-mile DCXC course.

A big win this week came from Century's Jacob Spera at the Mountain Run on Wednesday. He ran away from a talented field, and even more importantly, he led his team to a huge win over their crosstown rivals at Liberty. Linganore's Micah Hewitson broke free from an even deeper field at the Urbana Invitational, setting a new personal best of 16:11. Down in Cary, North Carolina, Riverdale Baptist's Anthony Gordon clocked the fastest time by a Maryland runner at 16:50.20.

Voting closes at 10 PM on Thursday! Voting is unlimited and feel free to share with your coaches, family, friends, teammates, teachers, and more!
