Tracking Gains In The Girls Discus


The 2017 season is tracking to be a big year in the girls discus. Donovan Catholic senior Alyssa Wilson of Toms River, NJ, is leading the nation after already throwing 182 feet and is closing in on last year's top mark.

Elena Bruckner, a current University of Texas freshman, had the best throws in the nation in 2015 and 2016. She finished her high school career as the fourth-best performer all-time and with the 13th-best throw all-time. Wilson is tracking just off that pace and by the end of the season will look to hit similar distances.

The national record and each of the top 10 marks all-time are held by Mansfield, Texas, native Shelbi Vaughan, a Rio Olympian and two-time NCAA champion at Texas A&M.

As a whole last year, only had 11 girls threw farther than 160 feet. This year, there have already been 12, with a handful on the cusp of that mark.
