Khance Meyers Wins A Junior College National Indoor Title In The 200

Khance Meyers has been preparing for a national title for the last three years.

The East Kentwood (MI) High graduate finally got one on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas, earning a National Junior College Athletic Association title at 200 meters for Hinds Community College on a banked track at Texas Tech University with a winning time of 20.65 seconds.

It marked Meyers' first effort under 21 seconds indoors and came two years after he finished third overall at New Balance Nationals Indoor in 2016.

Meyers hasn't taken the most traditional path in collegiate track and field. Though talented enough to compete for a Division I university, he enrolled at Hinds following his final year at East Kentwood.

That hasn't limited his aspirations, though. His winning time on Saturday would stack up with the best freshmen in the country, and it ranks second only to Coatesville (PA) High freshman Terrance Laird, who scooped up a second-place outing at the Big Ten championships.

Meyers will head into the spring campaign with a lot to build toward. He owns a personal best of 10.39 seconds from an AAU Region 12 Qualifier last June -- he won an AAU Junior Olympic Games title in his age group the following month -- and has run 20.78 seconds outdoors in the 200.

That latter race, a second-place effort, was at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in 2016.

Perhaps Meyers could eye up another national title this spring.
