Second Male Runner to Represent Goucher at National Meet

WINNECONNE, Wisc. — Goucher's Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) saved his best race for last.

The senior was one of 279 runners who competed today at the NCAA Division III Championship at Lake Breeze Golf Club and he crossed the finish line in 25:30.78, good for 133rd place. His was the fifth-fastest time for an 8,000-meter race in the history of Goucher's cross country program and he shaved more than 28 seconds off his personal best for that distance.

Two miles into the race, Negreann was in 172nd place. He improved seven spots to 165th place at the three-mile mark and was in the 148th position by the time he completed four miles.

The individual champion was Ben Sathre from St. Thomas (Minn.) and the runner-up was Lee Berube from Geneseo. Sathre's winning time was 23:44.27, while Berube was clocked at 23:49.60.

Negreann is only the second male runner to represent Goucher at the NCAA Division III Championship. Jeff Olenick qualified in 1997 as a freshman for the national meet, which was conducted that year in Boston, and also in 2000 as a senior when it was held in Spokane, Wash.
