TOWSON, Md. - Two ECAC qualifiers and a new school record highlighted the Tigers' performance in the Towson Invitational Track & Field Meet Saturday afternoon in Johnny Unitas Stadium.
"I'm really pleased with how we performed today," said Tiger coach Roger Erricker. "We won several events and I thought with the weather being what it was today we performed very well in the conditions."
Graduate student Katie Ogden successfully defended her 10,000 meter run title and easily qualified for the post-season ECAC Meet with a 37:16.74 clocking. FreshmanElizabeth Tauber finished second in 38:22.46.
Freshman Alexis Appezzato continued her assault in the javelin, taking first place with a throw of 142'3" to qualify for the ECAC's. It was her second straight first place showing and also moved her closer to Kelly Robinson's school record of 157'0".
Senior Shianna Smith, however, did rewrite a school record, eclipsing teammate Shannel Shivers' hammer mark by six inches. Smith threw 166'11" to inch past Shivers' mark of 166'5".
The Tigers dominated the high jump, taking the top three spots with junior Ashley Dabney grabbing first place with a 5'3" jump. Junior Katie Salke and sophomore Evan Campbell followed with 5'1" jumps.
Salke claimed the gold in the 100 hurdles, turning a 14.91. Campbell also ran the 400 dash, placing sixth in 58.41 but her time moved her into Towson's top 10 list at number eight.
Sophomore Emma Tobin, running her first 3000 steeplechase race, finished second in that event with her time of 11:41.94, good enough to place her fifth on Towson's all-time list. Junior Jessica Cooke was runner up in the long jump with a 17'5.5" effort.
Two meet records were broken. Senior Vennessa Henry of UMES broke her own shot put record by six inches with a throw of 46'6". On the men's side, UMES' Dillon Simon shattered the men's shot put record by almost two feet with a heave of 55'2.75".
There was no team scoring in the meet.
Towson is back on the track next Saturday when the Tigers travel to Delaware for a meet that gets underway at 11:00 a.m.
