North East’s Kaitlyn Henderson continued an impressive junior campaign by winning the girls’ individual title at the Susquehanna Division Cross Country Championship Meet at Patterson Mill on Tuesday in Bel Air.
Henderson finished the three-mile course in 20 minutes, 28 seconds, crossing the line 28 seconds before runner-up Steph McCartney, of the host Huskies. Henderson patiently waited to make her move, easing through the first two miles.
“At about the two-mile mark, I picked it up, and that’s right about where I took the lead,” she said. “I think I locked it in with about 800 (meters) left.”
The result came nearly two minutes faster than her sixth-place time at the same meet last fall, when Henderson placed sixth in 22:24.
Her effort in this year’s edition, along with three other teammates who placed in the Top 10, helped the Indians claim the girls’ team title with a total of 37 points. Erin Palmer (21:02) trailed just behind Henderson in third place, while Morgan Shipley (22:52) placed sixth and Crystal McCollum (22:55) earned seventh.
The Elkton duo of Lena Muldoon and Shannon Moody finished fourth and ninth, respectively, to record the other two Top-10 finishes among Cecil County competitors.
On the boys’ side, the Golden Elks placed four runners in the Top 15 to earn third in the team standings with 67 points. Xavier Alvarez (18:57) earned 10th and Robbie Luff (19:01) followed in 11th. Tim Taylor (19:06) recorded a 14th-place result, and Alex Marconi (19:08) crossed the line in 15th.
