State meet and open performances you say?

Kurt Keuhne ran a 1:53 or so at the Frederick County championships 2 years ago, and CR Thomas was right behind in 1:54-55.

Statewide, there are at least 10 returning runners who have already broke 2:00 in open races. I expect to see maybe four more added to the sub 1:56 list this year from the County!!!

Oh, and if your\'e counting all meets while they had State eligibility, then add Julius Coleman\'s (Mergenthaler) AAU national Championship time of 1:52.92.

Steve Hayes of Winston Churchill, Marcus Hershburger of Gaithersburg, and Pat Bailey of CMW all broke 9:25 in 2000 at the state meet. Also I forget Hayes 1600 time but I think it was pretty fast that year.

So, the obvious question which leaps out from the historical evolution of these Maryland records is \"What the hell happened?\" How is it that so many of these records are 25-40 years old when knowledge, technology, etc. are much more advanced? Supposedly, coaching, nuitrition, etc. should give current athletes a real head start, yet these records say just the opposite. Thanks Malmo, for putting things in perspective. This is embarrassing on many levels, but there\'s no time to whine. Could we maybe just have a thoughtful discussion and debate about how to make things better?

I would say one thing that has happened is the opportunities in other sports. Student involvement in other activities, and society has become lazy in general. I know if you talk to alot of the older guys they talk about how much they ran. I have talked to Mike Sheely about this and he said when he ran at Kenwood 70+ mile weeks were common. So it could be a combination of things. I will probably come back to the debate of high mileage versus lower mileage.

I have always been one that says kids are much busier now than years ago. Getting into college is much harder and important now.

\"when knowledge, technology, etc. are much more advanced\"

HUH? The the eff are you talking about? I\'ve been involved in the sport for over 30 years and haven\'t seen any evidence of this.

In Sheely\'s day 70 mile weeks were uncommon. In my day no one would raise an eyebrow if someone ran a 100 mile weeks. Well, they just say, \"I\'d better do that too.\" We ran in the morning before school, at 6:00. Do that today and someone would call it child abuse.

Let\'s face the facts, high school football players train more seriously than high school distance runners these days. Think I\'m wrong? Is your high school XC team doing two-a-days in August? Your football team is.

Malmo---that\'s a great chart and very edifying to co-op your language, but what does it imply about Maryland\'s development since the 60s?

And I thought I had too much time on my hands

George, did you take that from somewhere or did you just live on your computer for a couple of weeks

on the day rodney giles set the state record in the 800 with a time of 1:51.0, he also won the 1600 with a time of 4:17.8 and the 400 with a time of 47.8 and ran the anchor leg of the 3200 relay to the championship with a 1:46.7. All this was done in a time span of approx 5 hours. this is probably the most outstanding performance I have seen in over 25 years of covering high schol track.
