  • Ocean Lakes was able to win the 4x400 from the slowest of three sections with a time of 3:33.83.
  • Grassfield's James Broom was able to break away from a pack of Forest Park distance runners (who took 3 of the top 4 places) in the 3200 meter run with a 9:52.33 victory.
  • In the highly anticipated matchup between Grassfield's Grant Holloway & Forest Park's Mustaqeem Williams, it was Holloway as the 300 winner in a 34.43 clocking. Williams was second in time of 34.90 (US #10), while Holloway moves up to US #5 in event.
  • Tre Fields of Atlee won boys 1000 in 2:36.74, which is an indoor PR for him (2:41 previous best), but had run 2:36.54 outdoors in the polar bear meet last year as a sophomore.
  • US #2 time of 1:06.18 in the boys 500 by Ricky Morgan of Forest Park to move to the top of the state leaderboard. Western Branch pressed them in second place with a time of 1:31.75.
  • Oscar Smith's Isaac Arriola enjoyed two victories in the jumps this weekend following up his US #3 leap in the triple jump yesterday with a winning mark of 21'4.50" in the long jump to finish just over 2 inches ahead of last night's 55 meter dash winner Isaiah Harper of Grassfield (21'2").

Boys Highlights

  • The state of Virginia is becoming the mecca for the boys' high jump this indoor season nationally with Cameron Holdren of Liberty Christian Academy joining four other Virginians who have cleared at least 6'8" this season on Saturday. Holdren added to his US #3 clearance of 6'8" in the high jump with a second event win in the long jump with a US #12 leap of 22'6.25" to finish ahead of current US #9 ranked Requan Harley of E.C. Glass.
  • Matthew Zajac of E.C. Glass and Anthony Bowling of Marion continued their great rivalry in the throws into 2014. Bowling always seemed to have Zajac's number in state meet competition last year, but Zajac enjoyed a victory against Bowling at Liberty University this weekend with a US #6 and state best mark of 57'6.25", while Bowling threw for a season best mark of 56'3" (US #12) as the event runnerup.
  • Amherst County's Carlos Curevas had lost his VA #1 ranking in the pole vault last night when Atlee's Bryce Simpson cleared 14 feet at the Southeastern Invite, but Curevas bumped up his season best clearance of 13'9" to 14 feet to join Simpson for a share of the state leaderboard.
  • E.C. Glass swept the top two places in the boys triple jump with Aaron Deane (1st, 43'00.75") and Requan Harley (2nd, 42'4").
  • Southeast Raleigh boys set a new meet record in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:27.97. Their relay is one of the fastest in country after running 3:22 earlier in season. The Lee-Davis boys were the fastest among the VA schools in a time of 3:33.06.
  • Alleghany's Gaige Kern put in one good surge and he was gone after he left the field in the 3200 meter run en route to a 11 second PR of 9:48.76.
  • Only 3 were able to run under 37 seconds in the boys 300 meter dash to leave the door open for Javon Guerrier of Glen Allen to claim first from the second fastest section with a 36.34 clocking.
  • After a disappointing cross country season for himself individually and his Blacksburg team, Michael Carter is back on track as shown with his 2:36.79 win in the 1000 as well as teammate Kenneth Hagen able to grab second (2:37.26) doubling back quickly from the 500 among a triple with the 4x800 as well in the morning.
  • Southeast Raleigh's Jamaree Murray had the lone US #1 performance of the meet with a 1:05.77 clocking in the 500 meter dash after Forest Park's Ricky Morgan had dropped the US leading time down to 1:06.18 less than two hours prior. Blacksburg's Kenneth Hagen set Murray up well for a fast time leading through the first 400 meters and running a solid time of 1:06.49 as runner-up.
  • Lee-Davis boys took the 4x200 meter relay in a winning time of 1:33.95. It was a good day overall for the Lee-Davis sprint crew after finishing runner-up in the 4x400 later in the meet.
  • Rural Retreat's Matthew Farmer pulled away from the field in the boys 1600 with a 4:26.81 PR, which easily qualifies him for the first Group 1A-2A state indoor meet.. Glen Allen's Stanley Davis was runner-up in a time of 4:30.
  • Heritage's Jamik Alexander rolled in the boys 55 meter dash with a US #19 clocking of 6.53, which also is a PR for the junior Alexander who had a best last year of 6.61.

  • No individual running events for sub 5 minute miler Katie Fortner of Cave Spring on Saturday (ran a leg on the 4x400), but she did compete in the high jump, which she won on a tiebreaker against Heritage's Chelsie Sadler and Cave Spring teammate Emily Fulton with all three successfully clearing a height 5'2".
  • Hidden Valley junior Breontae Crump was not at her best (threw 39'10" season best two weeks ago), but a mark of 37'9.25" was still good enough at the Bulldog Invite to claim first place in the girls' shot put.
  • Charlottesville's Tamara Starchia (35'8") was able to counter and keep Heritage's Laquasha McPhaul (2nd, 34'6.75") and Chelsea Sadler (3rd, 34'2.25") from giving their school a 1-2 dominant finish in the triple jump.
