Dorrell leads a 1-2-3 sweep by VA in Montgomery Inv mile

With Millrose Mile invitations on the line and intense competition from some of Maryland and Pennsylvania's best milers, the state of Virginia had a dominant showing in the elite mile race at the Montgomery Invitational in Landover, Maryland on Saturday. Blacksburg senior Peter Dorrell (pictured left by John Herzog) led a top three sweep of Virginians in the boys' mile race with a 4:16.81 victory. Dorrell had been considered a pre-race favorite, so his win was not nearly as a surprise to have two other Virginians finish right behind him under 4:20 to best the remainder of the field in Oakton senior Joe Lorusso (2nd, 4:17.83) and Orange County senior Logan Collins (3rd, 4:18.55). All three individuals ran personal best times at Montgomery.

Maryland ruled in the girls' mile though with a close finish between Walt Whitman's Morgan Gay (5:08.48) and Bethesda-Chevy Chase's Alex Doll (5:08.53) for first and second. Osbourn Park sophomore Ariel Karabinus was the top finisher from Virginia in the race with a third place run of 5:15.18.

Green Run's Charisse Bryant improved upon her state leading time in the 55 meter hurdles with a 8.16 victory at the PG Center. Bryant is now ranked third in the country in the hurdles.

There were several solid performances in the field events. Tynita Butts of T.C. Williams ended up third in the high jump despite clearing 5'6" with three others, while winning the long jump with a mark of 17'2". Mountain View senior Olu Olamigoke tied Western Branch's Jeffrey Artis for the state's best mark in the triple jump with a US #5 mark of 47 feet. Olamigoke also placed second in the long jump (22'0"). Brooke Point junior Colleen McGlade joined four others in the state with a clearance of 11 feet in the pole vault.

The DMR saw many teams loading up with their best talent and it showed with the times. The Battlefield girls broke 13 minutes to place second in the event between two of Maryland's best in Eleanor Roosevelt (1st, 12:49) and Walt Whitman (3rd, 12:58) with a time of 12:52.75. Thomas Edison and Potomac School also ran well in the DMR with Edison anchored by Leoule Degfae (2nd, 10:51.81) and Potomac School anchored by Johns Ross (3rd, 10:54.27).
