SACRAMENTO, Ca. - Huntingtown's Harleigh White won the 2016 USATF Junior Olympic triple jump Friday with a personal best jump of 41'4.50!
The two-time 3A state champion in the event, White jumped over a foot farther than her previous personal best on her final attempt to win the 17-18 division at the 2016 USATF JO National Championship.
"This is by far [my] greatest accomplishment," she said. "After indoor nationals I set a goal to jump 41 feet by the end of the summer and I did just that."
White was in fifth place at the time of her final attempt. "I said to myself that it only takes one," she recalled. "I needed my last jump to be the one. My grandfather recently passed so I said it was going to be good for him." White knew when she landed that she had done something special.
"I looked at the board markings and it was past 40 so I knew it was a good jump," she said. "But it also felt great - it felt like a PR."
White had a strong junior outdoor season, winning the 3A triple jump title and finishing sixth at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. However, after jumping 40'2.00 New Balance Indoor Nationals White had yet to clear 40 feet again.
"I continued training, and I have always told myself to never be too comfortable," she said. "I also knew I had to be patient which kept me from becoming frustrated. With the support behind me and all the great coaching I have received it all added up to help me reach my goal."
Only a rising senior, White's next goal is to clear 42 feet by next indoor season. As for long term goals, White hopes to win more national titles and hopefully improve enough to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the future.
