3A Girls Team Champions - Franklin

Nyjari McNeil had been a one athlete wrecking crew for the most part in her first two years at Franklin. A state champion at the 400, 500, and 800 meter distances, there were simply not enough events and help for McNeil to win a state title herself.

She certainly got some support this year with the transfers of two state champion caliber athletes in Tylar Colbert from Digital Harbor and Cameron Hinton from Maryvale Prep. Both new teammate additions came thru in the clutch at the state meet. Colbert was a state runner-up in both the 55 meter dash (7.20) and 40.67) for 16 points.

Meanwhile, Hinton had one of the more impressive individual times of the entire day with a sub 40 clocking winning the 3A girls 300 title in 39.59. She doubled back to add another 8 points in a runner-up finish (1:16.57) in the 500 meter dash to a familiar training partner...Nyjari McNeil.

For McNeil, it was a third straight indoor title in the 500, but she felt short of her stated goal of breaking the 3A state meet record in the event (1:14.58) with her winning time of 1:15.13. She came back within two hours to repeat as the 3A state indoor 800 meter champ in a decisive 7 second victory with her 2:17.24 effort.

Their 4x800 meter relay might have been the biggest surprise of the meet for their squad as they finished third overall in the 3A race for 6 points in a time of 9:57 and did not even run McNeil as one of their legs.

McNeil was saved for the end of the meet instead as she rallied the Franklin girls down by a few places in the 4x400 meter relay as anchor leg to overtake James Hubert Blake's relay in the final strides with the fastest time overall in among the state meets for all 4 classifications at 3:57.16.
