2016 was the final year of the combined Maryland and DC private school state championships. Two sub-16 conference champions did not compete after running (along with their teams) a year before, allowing Mount St. Joseph to pile in the finishers after Dalton Hengst and dominate the large school team standings. Park School senior Timmy Barrick could have been right in the mix for the second spot in the small school team race behind Goretti's William Jones - his 16:38 performance at the MIAA championships was one of the seven fastest times at the meet across all classifications. A rematch between Good Counsel and Gonzaga in a battle for the second spot behind Mount St. Joseph would have been a fascinating race as well.

The girls side? National Cathedral's Page Lester ran away from the rest of the group in clocking a 17:59 season best, but there were plenty of girls from both Maryland and DC that could have battled for that second spot. It was one of the best freshman classes in DC area history, as Lacey Eden, Allysa Combs, Megan Lynch and Cady Hyde (who all either won a conference title or ran at least 19:10) could have really given the cross-border state meet the sendoff it deserved.
