Karayianis won last year's state title with much more room to spare, putting almost 45 seconds between him and the field. The race, however, would have been far more interesting had it included St. Albans' Damian Hackett and Calvert Hall's Owen Johnson. The two finished 12th and 13th, respectively, at the Foot Locker Northeast regional meet, nearly representing the area at nationals. And how about a meeting between the MIAA champions from Calvert Hall and the WCAC champions from Gonzaga?

Was there any race more exciting than the IAAM matchup between Key freshman Storrie Kulynych-Irvin and Mount de Sales sophomore Juliette Whittaker? Whittaker owned the faster personal best heading into the race, but Kulynych-Irvin dominated (although they both won titles as they were competing in separate conferences). Would Whittaker, an eventual national qualifier, have bounced back in a hypothetical rematch at the private school state meet? And how would the DC underclassman duo of Meredith Gotzman and Lili Grant have fit in to the field? Gotzman and the St. John's girls (four girls at 19:45 or faster at the Team Nationals southeast regional meet) would have likely been a favorite for the girls team title as well.
