Week in Review: Maryland HS Indoor Track, Dec. 6 to Dec. 11

Once again, eight different teams across Baltimore County came together for the second BCPS League Meet of the indoor season. The meet was hosted by Baltimore County Public Schools at the Fifth Regiment Armory. 

Sprints

55 Meter Dash

Franklin's Myles Taylor won the 55m event after a solid performance of 6.84. Behind him were Overlea's William Scott (6.91) and Western Tech's Elijah White (6.98). Taylor, Scott and White were the only athletes to run underneath the seven-second margin. 

For the girls, Western Tech's Samara Jones took the win in a time of 7.73. She was followed by Franklin's Kaylyn Johnson who finished second with a time of 7.93. Jones and Johnson were the only two girls to finish in under eight seconds. The third-place finisher was Carver A&T's Emani Malone in a time of 8.17.

300 Meter Dash

New Town's Dominic Dangerfield was victorious in the 300m event. Dangerfield snagged the first-place title after running a time of 39.16. Western Tech's Elijah White followed behind, finishing in second with a time of 39.80. This would be White's second top 3 performance for the meet. The third finisher was another New Town athlete; Aaron Cousin took third place with a time of 39.95. All three boys in the top 3 ran under the 40-second barrier and were the only athletes to do so at the meet. 

On the girls' side, Western Tech's Laila Gaynor was the clear winner in the event. Gaynor had an elite performance after she won the race with a time of 43.10. Previously, Gaynor was ranked as the seventh-fastest top returner in the event. Currently, she runs an MD #3. Following Gaynor was New Town's Jade Hardy, finishing second in a time of 45.21. The third-place finisher was another Western Tech athlete; Samara Jones made another top 3 appearance after running a 46.26.

500 Meter Dash

Towson's Adam Hudacek dominated the 500m event. He became the overall champion after a time of 1:18.50, which was four seconds ahead of the next competitor. To add, he was the only athlete to run under the 1:20 mark. Behind him was Overlea's Jaden Burrows in second after a performance of 1:22.42.

Once again, Western Tech's Laila Gaynor was victorious in yet another sprinting event. This time, Gaynor surpassed her competitors in the 500m event with a blistering time of 1:23.09. Gaynor was previously ranked as one of the top returners for this event. It's evident why after running an MD #4 for the season. To add, she finished fourth overall (including both boys' and girls' performances), and she was less than a second away from being third. The next athlete to cross the finish line was Carver A&T's Nadira Cantey who took second after a time of 1:27.41.

Distance

800 Meter Run

It was a close battle for first place between Catonsville's Ed Parker and Towson's Trent Raffaelli. However, Parker managed to outkick Raffaelli for the win. Parker finished in a time of 2:22.78, while Raffaelli finished in second with a time of 2:23.15. 

Another Catonsville athlete became the 800m event winner; Casey Fisher was victorious in a time of 2:45.36. She was the only girl to break the 2:50 mark. Overlea's Mariam Sanni trailed behind, finishing second in a time of 2:50.12.

1600 Meter Run

Carver A&T's Evan Calderon dominated the event. Calderon finished in a time of 5:05.51, which granted him a lead of about 20 seconds. Notably, during the 2021 cross country season, Calderon was the runner-up at the MPSSAA 2A North Region Championships. Catonsville's Ed Parker made another top 3 appearance in a distance event. This time, he finished second in the 1600m race after running a time of 5:25.66.

On the girls' side, Catonsville's Elizabeth Owens snagged the first-place title after an impressive 6:01.04 performance. Western Tech's Evelyn Sangree finished behind her in second place with a time of 6:05.93. 

3200 Meter Run 

Catonsville went 1-2 in the 3200m event. Zachary Sanders led the duo with a first-place finish and time of 11:27.61. He was the only athlete to run under the 11:30 mark. His teammate, Teddy Taylor, followed behind in second with a time of 11:39.12. 

For the girls, Franklin's Emma Frantz took home the individual title after a performance of 13:37.93. Catonsville's Isabela Bianco was not far behind in second with a time of 13:44.23. 

Hurdles

55 Meter Hurdles

De'Shaun Boyd from Western Tech outperformed the rest of his competition in the 55m hurdles event. He ran a time of 9.26 and was the only athlete to run under the 10-second margin. Overlea's Antonio Mable followed in a time of 10:23. On the girls' side, Carver A&T's Marissa Bookoff finished first with a time of 10.69 and became the only girl to run sub-11. Overlea's Nevaeh Frierson finished behind her in 11.04. 

Field Events

High Jump

Franklin's Myles Taylor proved to be a well-rounded competitor after two first-place finishes at the meet. His second first-place title came from the high jump event where he reached a height of 5-10.00. Taylor's performance is currently an MD #2. Another Franklin athlete finished first in the high jump event; Reece Dell was the first female finisher after reaching a height of 4-09.00. 

Shot Put

Western Tech's Dawon Holmes was the boys' first-place finisher in the event after throwing a distance of 29-11.00. The number one performance came from the girls' side; Franklin's Dasha Beaton threw a distance of 33-11.00, which is currently an MD #3. 


Team Scores

For the team scores, the Western Tech team took home both of the team titles -- one for the boys and one for the girls. The girls scored 83 points and secured the win after top performances by Laila Gaynor, Samara Jones and Evelyn Sangree. The boys scored 71 points and secured the first-place title after solid performances by Elijah White, De'Shaun Boyd and Dawon Holmes
