Week in Review: Maryland HS Indoor Track, Dec. 6 to Dec. 11


Once again, eight different teams across Baltimore City came together for the second Baltimore City League Meet of the indoor season. The meet was hosted by Baltimore City Public Schools at the Fifth Regiment Armory.

Sprints

55 Meter Dash

According to unofficial times, Paul Laurence Dunbar's Aaron Charles ran a time of 6.16, which is an MD #1. This performance was hand-timed, and Charles will be running in the Baltimore City League Meet #3 for an official time. Charles' time was not the only impressive time for the event. Second place went to Carver Vo-Tech's Michael Gee Jr. who ran a time of 6.49 and was the only other athlete to run under the 6.50 margin. Gee Jr's performance is a current MD #2 and a US #15. The next three athletes were all from Digital Harbor: Jawon Blue (3rd, 6:56), Joshua Ross (4th, 6.56), and Alpha Balde (5th, 6.59). Blue ran an MD #3, Ross ran an MD #4 and Balde ran an MD #6. All top 5 times from this race were considered elite performances by our standards. 

Another Paul Laurence Dunbar athlete placed first for the 55m event; Tyra VanDorn took home the individual title after a 7.63 performance. She was followed by Digital Harbor's Mikaya Johnson (7.75) and Western's Trinity Wynn (7.88), placing second and third respectively. 

300 Meter Dash

Digital Harbor's Tristin Gray was victorious in the 300m event. Gray, a freshman, won the event with a time of 39.66. Paul Laurence Dunbar's Aaron Charles made another top 3 appearance with a second-place finish of 39.77. Carver Vo-Tech's Cory Ardery followed in third with a time of 39.91. Gray, Charles and Ardery were the only athletes to run underneath the 40-second margin at the meet.

On the girls' side, Western's Jayla Green had an impressive win of 45.67, which granted her a bit of a lead. Baltimore City College's Rocksann Smith followed behind in second with 47.19. Then, Paul Laurence Dunbar's Tyra VanDorn had her second top 3 performance for the day. VanDorn finished in third with a time of 48:59.

500 Meter Dash

For the 500m event, Digital Harbor's Daniel Hawkins-Perry was the clear winner. Hawkins-Perry finished first with a time of 1:18.65, which gave him a lead of about three seconds. Dunbar's Daionta McIntosh (1:21.22) and Baltimore City College's Sean Cooper (1:21.23) finished in second and third, respectively. 

Baltimore City College went 1-2-3 for the girls. Tyler Bey led the charge with a first-place finish of 1:34.68. Her teammates, Imani Dargan (2nd, 1:37.47) and TyTiana Grandy (3rd, 1:42.35) trailed behind. 

Distance

800 Meter Run

Carver Vo-Tech's Kenneth McIntyre was the 800m champion after a performance of 2:40.81. Digital Harbor took over the next two spots with juniors Jasiyah Gauthier (2nd, 2:43.00) and Jaylin Howard (3rd, 2:44.10). McIntyre, Gauthier and Howard were the only male athlete to break three minutes in the event. 

On the girls' side, it was a complete Baltimore City College sweep. The team went 1-2-3 in the event, led by Gabrielle Mann. Mann was the girls' champion in a winning time of 3:15.97. Her teammates, Fiona Shadis (3:17.37) and Demilade Ifedayo-Adesida (3:29.47) finished second and third, respectively. 

1600 Meter Run 

Digital Harbor's Pape Mbengue finished first in the event with a time of 5:44.06. Carver Vo-Tech's Kenneth McIntyre finished a few seconds behind in a time of 5:50.56. This was McIntyre's second top 3 performance of the day. Baltimore City College's Raphael McFadden was the third-place finisher with a time of 5:56.28. Mbengue, McIntyre and McFadden were the only athletes to run sub-6 in the event. 

For the girls, Patterson's Danait Gebru took the win in a time 7:20.21, which granted her a lead of five seconds. Baltimore City College's Larainah Bennett was second in 7:25.03. 

Hurdles

55 Meter Hurdles

It was a Digital Harbor sweep for the 55m hurdles event. The team went 1-2-3. Quantez Wilson led the trio with a winning time of 8.31. His teammates, Dvonte Hearns (8.78) and Dominic Griffin Jr (9.56), finished second and third, respectively. These top 3 boys were the only boys to run underneath the 10-second margin. 

Digital Harbor ended up going 1-2 in the girls' 55m hurdles. Camille Izuwa led the duo with a first-place finish of 9.91. She was the only girl to run sub-10. Her teammate, Sameia Lucas, finished behind her in a time of 10.41.

Field Events

High Jump

Digital Harbor's Daniel Hawkins-Perry proved to be a well-rounded competitor after two first-place finishes at the meet. His second first-place title came from the high jump event where he reached a height of 5-04.00. For the girls, Baltimore City College's Lila Lee was the sole competitor in the event and won with a height of 4-06.00. 

Shot Put

Digital Harbor's Tristin Gray was the boys' first-place finisher in the event after throwing a distance of 38-00.00, and the competition wasn't even close. The next-best distance was 28-00.00 by Forest Park's Dominick Lott. For the girls, Western's Jayla Lades was the champion with a winning distance of 26-00.00. Patterson's Anaiya Freeman followed in second after throwing a distance of 24-11.00.
