A classic season opener returns for many teams across Maryland as Prince Georges's Indoor Sports Complex opens its doors for the Howard County Winterfestival, which took place on December 17th, 2023. Many teams came out strong and placed athletes amongst the top rankings of Maryland, setting the tone for the 2023 indoor season.

Men

Sprints:

55m dash: Oakland Mills Senior Trevin Mchargh came through with a time of 6.55. Gonzaga College's Kelvin Winston finished 2nd and Hammond's Kaleb Cave came in 3rd.

300m dash: In the 300m dash, North Point Senior Antoine Spencer finished first in 35.41, the fastest time run in Maryland this season. Deon Windham of C.H. Flowers was 2nd with a time of 35.79, and Mount Hebron's Aeron Abeldin finished third in 35.81. 

500m dash: In the 500m, Atholtons Darian Tarver Jr ran a MD #2 time of 1:06.94. Jordan Tuck of Northern Calvert came in 2nd with a time of 1:07.17 while Aeron Abeldin crossed the line in 3rd place with a time of 1:07.27.

55h: In the 55-meter hurdles, Dominion Jacobs of Huntingtown won the event in 7.62, Jacobs has already previously run the 2nd fastest time in Maryland this season. Mergenthaler sophomore Justin DeVaughn placed 2nd in 7.74. Quince Orchard's Roberto Terrell finished in 3rd place in 7.77. 

Distance:

800m run: Towson's Ryan Wahler came out on top in sub-2-minute fashion in today's 800m race, being the only competitor to do so with an official time of 1:59.95. Braden Welby of Winston Churchill finished 2nd in 2:01.77 while Christian Brower of Long Reach crossed the line in 2:02.47, placing third. 

1600m run: In the boy's 1600m, Centennials Sebastian Martinez finished first in 4:24 passing Christian Brower of Long Reach with approximately 100 meters to go, Brower finished second with a time of 4:25.86, a new indoor PR for Brower. Towson's Ryan Wahler finished third in 4:30.25. 

3200m run: Colgan High School would dominate the 3200m run placing Hayden Hauser and Dylan Zimmerman in the top 2. Hauser won the event in 9:39.90 and Zimmerman placed 2nd in 9:44.67. Ashton Tolson of C. Milton Wright finished 3rd in 9:49.17.

Field: 

High Jump: Oakland Mills Senior Abdur Hassan took home High Jump gold with a 6-02.00 Jump. Long Reach's Tyler Jagun placed 2nd and Miles Taylor of Franklin placed 3rd. 

Shot Put: Montgomery Blair's Nahom Tsegaye would throw an MD #2 length of 49'10.5 to win the Shot Put. Jaylin Ivey of Bowie threw 49 feet and 5.25 inches to place 2nd. Placing third would be Donovan Tyler of St. Johns College in 47'.75. 

Pole Vault: Arran Moran of Broadneck vaulted a height of 12ft and 4 inches, an MD #2 height. Westminster's own Lukas Michael placed 2nd with a height of 11ft and 6 inches. Grant Smith of Francis Scott Key earned bronze with a height of 11 feet. 

Long Jump: Oakland Mill's Abdur Hassan won the long jump in a distance of 21ft and 5.75 inches. Quince Orchard's Roberto Terrell placed 2nd and Desmond Adeyemi of Wilde Lake placed 3rd.

Triple Jump:  Mount Vernon's Keivon Bellfield won Triple Jump gold with a jump of 41ft and 10in. Callum Boye of Frederick placed 2nd and North Points Aaron Smith placed 3rd.

Relays:

4x200: The elite Oakland Mills 4x200 relay squad comes in hot running a Maryland #1 time of 1:31.70

4x400: Merganthaler Voc Tech took home 4x400 gold today with a time of 3:35, besting Oakland Mills and Quince Orchard, Oakland mills ran a time of 3:36.02 and close behind was Quince Orchard in 3:36.52.

4x800: Chopticon took the 4x800m relay win in 8:25.20, holding off Winston Churchill's team which ran a 8:26.07. Montgomery Blair finished third with a time of 8:32.10. 

Distance Medley Relay: In the Boy's Distance Medley Relay, Winston Churchill came out on top with a time of 11:10.01. 2nd place would be captured by Towson in 11:12.34 and 3rd by Colgan in 11:17.33. Liberty placed 4th making Winston Churchill, Towson, and Liberty teams the fastest in Maryland at this point in the season. 

Girl's

Sprints:

55m dash: Junior Arayanna Ladson of Mount Hebron High School won the 55-meter dash in 7.20. Her time ties for the 3rd fastest time run in Maryland so far. Wheaton Freshman Iyanni Daley placed 2nd in 7.27 and St. Johns College's Lailah King placed 3rd in 7.29. 

300m dash: In the 300m dash, Cohren Corbin of North Point ran a time of 40.28 to take the victory. St. Johns College's Cymia Yourish would take 2nd in 40.33, and Elena Cooper of Bryn Mawr placed 3rd in 41.52

500m dash: Colgan's Kalyncia Taylor would take home 500m as the only female to run under 1:20, running a time of 1:17.86. St. Johns College's Natasha Mosely placed 2nd in 1:20.48 and third place was taken by Northern-Calvert's Gayle Henderson in 1:21.25

55m hurdles: Morgan Lane of Hammond ran a Maryland #3 time of 8.47. C.H. Flowers Nina Pitt placed 2nd in 8.59 and Ariyah Edwards of Baltimore City College placed 3rd in 8.85

Distance:

800m run: Georgetown Visitation Prep's Madison Rassas crossed the line in 2:24.68, behind her was Hallie Muniz of Winston Churchill in 2:25.61 and Evelyn Rogers of Elizabeth Seton in 2:25.69. All three were the only ones to run under 2:30 for the 800-meter run. 

1600m run: Evelyn Rogers of Elizabeth Seton ran a time of 5:11.55 to win the 1600-meter run, besting Westministers Hannah Toth who ran a 5:12.91. Both Competitors are ranked 1-2 in the state of Maryland at this time. Third place would be captured by Hallie Muniz of Winston Churchill who ran a time of 5:19.35. 

3200m run: Temi Ario of Overlea won the race in 11:07.48, less than half a second away from the current Maryland best for the 3200-meter run. Ario was the only competitor to run under 11:10. Second place went to Lauren Virmani of River Hill in 11:25.90 and third to Vivian Kelly of Georgetown Visitation Prep. 

Field: 

Pole Vault: Sarah Gassman of Westminster won the Pole Vault with a new MD #3 height of 11 feet and 6 inches. Carson Boteler of Broadneck placed 2nd with a height of 10 feet and Oakland Mills' Rosalie Rosenberg placed third with a height of 9 feet and 6 inches. 

Shot Put: Merganthaler's Cierra Gray won Shot Put gold with a throw of 37 feet and 7.25 inches. Gray now leads Maryland in the Girl's Shot Put this season so far.  Northern Calvert placed Gabby Cope and Annie Campell in 2nd and 3rd place, Cope threw a distance of 35 feet and 7.5 inches, and Campell with 35 feet and 5.25 inches.

Long Jump: Corianne Bell of North Point jumped 18 feet and 1.25 inches to win the Long Jump and place 2nd in the current Maryland top rankings for this season. Shania Staats of Wilde Lake placed 2nd with a jump of 17 feet and 4.5 inches. Third went to Colgan's Elizabeth Yeboah-Kodie who jumped 17 feet and 1.24 inches.

Triple Jump: C.H. Flowers senior Nina Pitt won the Triple jump with a jump of 36 feet and 1 inch, Pitt is now the 3rd best jumper in Maryland so far this season. James Hubert Blakes Mame Diop placed 2nd with a jump of 35 feet and 8 inches and Brooklyn Lyttle of Elizabeth Seton placed third with a jump of 34 feet and 7 inches.

High Jump: Ruth Smith of Howard took home High Jump gold with a jump of 5 feet and 4 inches, she now is the 2nd best in the event in Maryland this season. Dubar's Arianna Guerrero jumped a height of 5 feet and 2 inches to place 2nd and Valerie Ashamu of Oakland Mills placed 3rd with a jump of 5 feet.

Relays:

4x200: St Johns College took home 4x200 meter relay gold in 1:42.34, coming in 2nd would be Colgan in 1:45.63, and third place would be taken by Elizabeth Seton in 1:46.45

4x400: James Hubert Blake ran a new Maryland #3 time to win today's 4x400 meter relay in 4:06.80, Bryn Mawer placed their team in 2nd with a time of 4:08.67 and C.H. Flowers in third with a time of 4:12.12. 

4x800: Georgetown Visitation Prep won the 4x800 relay in 9:56.16, being the only team to run under 10 minutes. Tuscarora placed second in 10:24.87 and James Hubert Blake placed third in 10:27.86.

Distance Medley Relay: Westminster won the Distance Medley Relay in 13:25.39, a new MD #2 time for the DMR. Overlea placed 2nd in 13:26.61 and third place went to South River in 13:40.31.
