Albemarle Boys
Osbourn Park Girls
Duos led the Albemarle boys and Osbourn Park girls to another Northwest Region title. Anthony Kostelac anchored Albemarle's 4x800 to a come from behind runner-up finish in his 1:53 high split and then followed up that performance with two more rather comfortable wins in the 1600 and 1000. Teammate Jordan Hill completed a successful sweep of the jumping events on Thursday with marks of 22'9" in the long jump, 44'8.50" in the triple jump, and 6'2" in the high jump to go along with scoring points in the 300 (3rd) and 55 (8th) meter dash races.
Osbourn Park senior Ariel Karabinus appears to not have lost much fitness during the recent winter storms as she nearly broke 5 minutes for the first time in the 1600 meter run defeating a loaded field featuring Kaitlyn Davis, Katherine Walker, and Hannah Lowery with a 5 second victory at 5:00.71. She won again later in the 1000 meter run in a time of 3:03.
Sophomore Breanna Walker also had a big met for Coach Mike Feldman's squad at Osbourn Park as the rising sprint star clocked a swift personal best of 7.26 in the finals of 55 meter dash and then went 1-2 in the 300 meter dash with sibling Fredsal Walker. Walker also anchored and brought from behind OP's 4x200 into second place to gain 8 points for her team.
No championship meets ever seem to avoid any drama or disqualifications and the Northwest Region was no different in the final race of the day as neither of the region's top two 4x400 meter relays in Stafford and Gar-Field will not be competing next week at the state meet. Entering the bell lap, Stafford's anchor leg cut in on Gar-Field's anchor which caused the baton of Gar-Field to be knocked up in the rain. Stafford was disqualified for cutting in and Gar-Field finished out of luck in fourth place (even after the disqualification) with the lost time due to the baton being knocked out.
