Freddie Hendricks Review

The Freddie Hendricks Track Fest featured some of the area\'s top runners, including very good teams from Pennsylvania and Virginia.

On the girls side, Sommerville of Western did a fantastic job in the short sprints, taking the gold in 200m in a meet record 24.66, and placing 2nd in the 100 in 12.04. Krystin Lawson of Riverdale Baptist destroyed her previous meet record of 12.20, running 11.87.
A new sprinter has come on the scene in freshman Kelly Christian of Catonsville. She placed 2nd in the 400m in 58.77 behind Pennsylvania and West Catholic sensation Latavia Thomas.
Quantika Stepney broke her own meet record in the 800 with a time of 2:21.37, but Delcastle\'s Keaira Dickerson won the event in 2:14.
Catonsville\'s Erin Whelan was one of six entrants who broke the previous 3000m meet record of 11:33, running a stellar 10:47.75.
Theresa Lewis of Western broke her own meet record in the 100m Hurdles by .02 of a second, winning in 14.06.
Western\'s sprint relays were magnificent, taking the 4x1 in a meet record 47.67 and the 4x2 in another meet record 1:39.81. In both relays, they beat a very strong West Catholic (PA) team. Bishop McNamara\'s 4x4 ran a great 4:05, while Largo\'s 4x8 was the only MD team to break 10 minutes. Bryn Mawr competed alone in the Distance Medley, running a great 12:24, with anchor Christy Johnson running a 4:54 1600m.
In jumps, Saniel Atkinson of Bishop McNamara won in 5-4. Brooke Staton of McDonough won the Triple Jump in 36-2, and placed 4th in the Long with a jump of 16-9. Her teammate, freshman Amanda Kimbers, got the bronze in the LJ in 17-4.
In throws, Jocelyn Wheeler of Largo won the shotput in a meet record 37-8.75.
Western Girls won the meet with 64 points, beating out West Catholic (PA) by 12 points and Delcastle (DE) by 16 points.

On the boys side, a number of fantastic performances were recorded.
In sprints, Justin Murdock of Glen Burnie beat out Aaron Anderson of Glen Burnie by 2 hundredths of a second (10.89-10.91). Roosevelt Cooper of Mervo took 4th in 11.06. Anderson avenged his close loss to Murdock by besting him in the 200m, winning in 22.03. Jeremy Samuels of DeMatha took the bronze in 22.23. The 400m featured Samuels, his teammate Michael Lemon, and Archbishop Carroll\'s Randy Lee in a great race. Lee took the gold in a great 47.39. Samuels took the silver in 48.16, while Lemon got 3rd in 49.61.
In the 800m, two boys broke 2 minutes, and both were from Gonzaga. Aaron Taylor ran a smoking 1:56.67, while his teammate Evans Shields ran 1:59.14.
In the 1500m, Woodlawn\'s Dwight Parker ran a fantastic race, running 4:03.34, which converts to a sub 4:20 1600 time. DeMatha\'s Will Mitchell took the bronze in 4:14.94. Gonzaga\'s Matt Chandler was the only MD runner to make the medal stand in the 3000, running 9:22.08, missing the gold by a hundredth of a second.
In the Hurdles, Brett Brown of CH Flowers won the 110 in 14.18, while DeMatha\'s Geoffrey Daley won the 400 Hurdles in 55.21.
In the relays, home team Mervo lost to PA\'s Simon Gratz twice, taking the silver in the 4x1 in 42.98 and in the 4x2 in 3:26.28. Gonzaga won the 4x8 in 8:11.
Jason Gross of McDonough won both of LJ and TJ, with a long jump of 22-01.75 and a Triple Jump of 46-02.75.
Gonzaga took home the title with 55 points, followed by Arundel with 46 pts and DeMatha with 45.
