Traditional cross country races feature a mass start on an extended starting line. Due to COVID-19 we have opted to split the start of the race into waves - there is no mass start. Runners that sign up and join a team will start together with their team and be assigned a wave number closer to race day. Runners that do not join a team will receive their wave assignment in an email closer to race day as well. On race day, runners are free to warm up on the property as needed and should remain socially distanced. The starter will call individual waves to the starting line beginning at 9:00 AM where teams/small groups will be sent off one at a time in a staggered format. This process allows for separation between groups and less congestion on the course. All runners will receive an official chip time. The race will be held rain or shine.

We understand that many high school and college athletes will not have the chance to compete as a team in cross country this fall. We want to try and solve that problem by introducing a team competition! Athletes can form teams of 5 people to compete against other teams in their chosen division (middle school, high school, college, and open/mixed). Only teams in the open/mixed division can have a mix of ages and/or genders. We will score complete teams (5 people) by cumulative time (the total time it took each member of the team to complete the course).

The 3mi course starts and ends near the main Terrapin Park parking lot, and travels throughout the scenic waterfront property. There are minimal stretches on paved surfaces, so spikes are acceptable. A course map will be posted shortly.

We will give out awards as follows:

* 1st place male and female teams in the middle school, high school, and college divisions

* 1st place team in the open/mixed division.

* 1st-3rd place male and female runners in the middle school, high school, college, and open/mixed divisions

COVID-19 RACE PROTOCOLS
We take health and safety very seriously. Based on guidance from the CDC and local health departments we have created the following operating protocols for MDXC:

1. All race staff will wear face coverings for the duration of the event.
2. Race registration will be limited to 250 individuals
3. All registrants will receive an email 3 days prior to the race reminding runners who feel ill or believe they may have come in contact with someone exposed to COVID-19 to stay home.
4. Hand sanitizer stations will be positioned at the packet pickup area, starting line, and finish line. Participants will be encouraged to utilize them throughout the event.
5. Runners will not be required to wear masks while running, but must wear a face covering before and after the race while at the park.
