Since she only runs cross country and competes in an isolated part of the state at Easton High away from the rest of state's top runners, Gearhart is often forgotten. But cannot forget her 19:04 third place run in 2A state XC race last year at Hereford that ranks 4th fastest among all returnees.

Taye really hasn't put together that great cross country race to validate her ranking, but winning the 4A outdoor 3200 state title certainly did over last year's 4A state XC champ Nora McUmber in a 11:01 PR. The senior from Paint Branch should vastly improve upon her 2014 state meet finish of 25th place in the 4A race.

The All-Maryland Preseason Girls XC Individual Rankings are released with an impressive name of rising stars and growing names in the sport within the state of Maryland. Several state champions from the track are found on the list including Maria Carberry, Bethelehem Taye, and Charlotte Kowalk as well as past cross country state champions in Hayley Jackson and Brit Lang.
However, an athlete who has never won a state title, but was a runner-up three times as a sophomore last year in 4A tops our preseason list in Annapolis junior Maria Coffin. Coffin's a natural selection to move into the #1 spot after her consistency through all three seasons and performing well in the post-season as well with a top 35 finish at Foot Locker Northeast and running her 5K PR of 17:19 at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
There are certainly more than a handful of returning girls capable of grabbing that #1 spot at any point this cross country season. Should be an exciting year of individual battles up front at major invites and championship races as well as seeing who ends up being Maryland's top representatives and finishers at Foot Locker Northeast and NXN Southeast. Could we be sending several girls to nationals? This talented group is certainly capable.
