Summer Training Blog: Virginia Brown (Entry #4)

Entry #3: July 31-August 6

Sunday, July 31:
Today I arrived at Concord Retreat Cross Country Camp in Yellow Spring, West Virginia. When I got there I went for an easy 2 mile, 15 minute run because I had a little bit of hip pain and then I iced and stretched.

Monday, August 1:
My hip felt a lot better today so I went for a 3.4 mile run in 30 minutes in the morning at 8:45 mile pace. We did lots of hills including one hill called the "wall" which is about a quarter of a mile of steep, straight uphill running. In the afternoon I did a 3.5 mile run in 30 minutes. This run was an out and back and the way there was all downhill and the way back was all uphill, so I was pretty sore after that.

Tuesday, August 2:
Today I went for a 7.25 mile run with some of my teammates and other top runners from Montgomery county. We finished the run in 1:00.21 and averaged about 8:20 pace. The trails we went on were very hilly in the first and last couple of miles. This was one of the hardest runs I have ever done, but once it was over I was glad I stuck with it the whole way. We had team competitions in the afternoon and I had to do planks, which I ended up holding for 5 minutes and 40 seconds, so my abs were sore along with my legs.

Wednesday, August 3:
45 minute run in the morning. This run was 5.25 miles at 8:20 pace. We ran along the highway in the beginning of the run, which is all downhill and when we turned around it was all uphill on the way back. In the afternoon we did an easy 3.5 mile, 30 minute shakeout run at about 9 minute pace.

Thursday, August 4:
I did a run called power lines which was about 7 miles long. The run starts out at the top of a hill and then you go down a steep, rocky path and back up another hill. We followed the power lines into the woods and ran there for the majority of the run, until we came back out and followed the power lines again. Since the run was so rocky and hilly, we maintained about 9:45 average pace the whole way.

Friday, August 5:
Today was long run day at camp so I ran 13.1 miles with my teammates. We kept the pace at a relaxed 9:45 pace throughout. Later on in the day we did a very easy 2.5 mile run down to the river near camp and swam around for a little while.

Saturday, August 6:
Today I did my last run at camp, which was an easy, relaxed 3.2 mile run at about 8:53 mile pace.

Weekly Mileage: 50.7
