Summer Training Blog: Virginia Brown (Entry #4)

Entry #4: August 7-13

Sunday, August 7:
Rest day after camp.

Monday, August 8:
Went out for an easy 4 mile run, but I forgot to take my medication beforehand, so right before I hit two miles, I started having a POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) attack, which when my blood pressure gets too low and I start to black out, so I had to lay down on a bench for a while. I kept running after that but I slowed my pace down to about 8:50 per mile, which seemed to help, so I just finished the run.

Tuesday, August 9:
For today I did a 1.5 mile easy warm up followed by a two mile tempo run at 6:15/ mile pace, which is faster than I usually like to do my tempo runs. After that I did a 2.5 mile cool down jog at about 9:30 pace.

Wednesday, August 10:
Today was our first day of official cross country practice. We ran about a mile for warm up. We had the option to split into either a 20 minute run group or a 40 minute run group, so I chose the 40 minute group. We did about 3.5 miles during the run.

Thursday, August 11:
Today we had the option again to do either 20 or 40 minutes and even though I wasn't feeling great I still did the 40 minute run. We ended up doing 1 mile for warm up and about 3.75 miles during the actual run.

Friday, August 12:
Yesterday I found out I have strep, so I wasn't feeling great during the run. We ran a mile for warm up and then ran our home course, candy cane city, which is a 5k loop. We did the whole 5k in 28:32, which was around 9:12 pace per mile.

Saturday August 13:
Today I did a tempo run with some of my teammates. We did about 1.5 miles for warm up and then we did the actual tempo on beach drive in DC, which is closed off to cars on the weekends. For the tempo, we did 3 miles at a fairly comfortable 7:20 pace. After that we did about half a mile of cool down jogging.

Weekly mileage: 28.35
I had been coming off one of my highest mileage weeks of the summer, so having a week just to relax and focus more on speed and shorter distances felt really good.
