Will Merritt became the first runner ever to qualify from Foot Locker Nationals out of Washington County when the Smithsburg senior finished 6th at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional in 15:46. Could have seen this performance after he won his second straight 1A state title with the fastest time of the day (15:54) at Hereford in a rare sub 16 performance on the state meet course. He's made a remarkable leap just over the past year when he started to gain notice in an upset of Darren Harman for the Washington County title before winning his first state title in cross country. His progression could be much greater in college.
