Girls Preview

The girls race features two of the most evenly-matched teams in the 2A classification this season. The Century and Winters Mill girls have met twice, and Winters Mill has won both of them - by a combined 17 points. In fact, in both of their matchups (Track and Trail and Crossfire invitationals) the team scores have read "1. Catoctin 2. Winters Mill 3. Century", which sets up an even more intriguing 2A West regional matchup.
On Thursday, however, the Century girls will have a chance to get payback on Winters Mill. Their 1-5 scoring spread has been tighter (using this season's personal bests for each runner) which bodes well in a smaller race. Led by junior Natalie Poulton they have four girls who have cracked the 21-minute mark this season, while no other team in the county has more than one.
Meanwhile the Winters Mill girls have the advantage of already beating the Century girls twice. Senior Emma Kartalia has clocked the fastest time of any girl in the county so far this season, and the young group behind her has shown the ability to break up Century's strong pack in their head-to-head matchups this season.
