3A State Recap: Cummins First Freshman Winner In Four Years

3A Girls Recap

A 3A girls race that was expected to be close and competitive throughout was made pretty one-dimensional thanks to C. Milton Wright freshman phenom Haley Cummins. After shooting out to an early lead on the flat part of the course, many held their breath to see how the freshman would tackle the infamously brutal back section of the course. When she came back out and up "The Dip" for the second time, she had widened the gap.

It was a truly dominant performance by Cummins, made all the more incredible being her first time racing at Hereford. After going down the dip for the first time, Northern's Molly Barrick was Cummins' lone competitor, but even she couldn't reel in the upstart rookie. Barrick wound up in second, a huge performance for a Northern-Calvert girls team that capped off an extraordinary 2016 season with a 3A state title.
