Farther down the Atlantic coastline, an even larger gathering of Maryland athletes will compete at the Nike Cross Southeast Regionals. The field is highlighted by Richard Montgomery senior Rohann Asfaw, who will be looking to grab an individual qualifying spot that barely eluded his grasp last year when he finished sixth. Another question will be if he can unseat Hengst at the top of the Maryland 5K leaderboard (Hengst currently leads at 15:11) and possibly even challenge the 15 minute mark? Joining Asfaw will be Adam Nakasaka (BCC, 4A runner-up), Kieran McDermott (Bel Air, fourth in 4A), Micah Hewitson (Linganore, third in 3A), Justin Diehl (Calvert, 2A runner-up) and Jay Hall (Westlake, fourth in 2A).

On the girls side, possibly even more impressive than the list of individuals will be the list of full teams competing from the state. The Walter Johnson girls - who just captured their fourth straight 4A title, will be in the championship race (albeit without top runner Abigail Green), along with 3A juggernaut Northern. Molly Barrick (Northern, 3A runner-up), Annie Imhof (Great Mills, third in 3A) and Abby Sweeney (Northern, fourth in 3A) will be three key girls to watch in the race.
