Looking Back At The Best Performances In A Great Week For Maryland!

Boys Leaderboard 5/1-5/6 - Girls Leaderboard 5/1-5/6

The Maryland state leaderboard saw a shakeup last week - these are the best performances from that time span.

A total of ten boys went under 50 seconds last week despite less-than-ideal sprinting conditions, led by Oxon Hill teammates Aaron Robinson and Gary Ross. Robinson's of 47.57 is a new MD #1 time, and Ross also went under 48 seconds to place third on the state leaderboard. Another standout in the quarter mile was North County freshman Ryan Willie who broke 50 seconds for the first time this season in his win at the Bob Golliday Invitational.

Over in the throws, St. Johns' Dalton Nichols has been simply unstoppable in the discus this season. He raised his personal best and MD #1 to 167'1 last Thursday at the IPSL Championships. Meanwhile, Northeast's Brent Boyer is emerging as a challenger to Jabari Bennett in the 3A classification after winning the shot put at the Bob Golliday Invitational with a throw of 55'10.

There were a couple MD #1 marks set at the Draper Invitational on Saturday as well. First, McDonogh senior Lucas Wright clocked a new personal best of 1:53.26 in the 800 (faster than teammate Dalton Hengst's), becoming the third boy already this spring to have run sub-1:54. Perhaps the biggest performance of the weekend, however, came from St. Andrews' Anthony Duruji - formerly of Northwest - in the triple jump. His personal best effort of 49'1.50 is the new top mark in Maryland by nearly two feet, and is the best in Maryland since 2013.

Speaking of the Draper Invitational, Bullis might have found out that Masai Russell is even better over hurdles than she is just running. Her 42.15 performance is not only the third-fastest in MileSplit Maryland's database heading back to 2000, but also the 16th-fastest in the entire country so far this spring. Also from the Draper Invitational, McDonogh's Jada Seaman officially joined the sub-12 second club in the 100.

Elsewhere beyond the borders of Maryland, Maria Coffin jumped back onto the leaderboard with a 4:56.26 1600 at the Hoka One Henderson Invitational in Pennsylvania. She joins Hayley Jackson and Samantha Facius as the only girls to have gone under 5 minutes in the event this spring so far, but others could be on the way soon, like Catoctin's Julien Webster. She came back from a defeat at the hands of Reilly Caldwell in the 1600 to win the 3200 at the Frederick County Championships in a new personal best of 10:51.08.
