2A Girls State Meet Preview By Event

4x800 Meter Relay

The 2A East Regionals saw the deepest group of 4x800 squads among the three regions this season, and the Kent Island girls came out on top. Only the Damascus girls ran faster among 2A teams all week, and depending on which teams bring their 'A' squad next week the Kent Island girls could find themselves running for a state title. The Hereford girls wrestled away the top spot on the 2A girls' 4x800 leaderboard a couple weeks ago at Last Track to Philly. At 9:40.70 it was the third-best effort by any Maryland team so far this winter behind only Bullis and South River. The Bulls comfortably won the 2A Central Regionals and will definitely be the favorite heading into the state meet next week.

The Damascus girls can certainly compete with Hereford with their 'A' team. They easily won the 2A West Regionals in 10:12.55, but their 9:46.39 Virginia Showcase performance shows what the squad is truly capable of. The South Carroll girls ran 10:00 at Last Track To Philly but didn't roll out the 'A' team at regionals, running 10:54.14 (still good enough for third and a spot at the state meet). With senior star Allison Zolkiewicz going for the 300-500-800 triple it's likely they won't run that same 10:00 team again.

That leaves for the 2A East regional teams to provide the depth. All four qualifying teams ran between 10:15 and 10:25 with the Kent Island girls coming out on top. Those same four teams may be in the running for the third spot at the state meet on Monday.
