3A Boys State Meet Preview By Event

4x800 Meter Relay

Last winter, Nathan McKinsey and the North Hagerstown boys 4x800 relay made it to the state meet for the first time in nearly two decades. Not only are the Hubs back in 2018, but they've got a real shot to win the whole thing. (Photo by Craig Amoss)

It's shaping up to be a close and exciting race to kick off the 3A boys' state meet, featuring some 4x800 powerhouses and some newcomers. The Oxon Hill boys ran away with both the indoor and outdoor state titles last year, but finished just fourth at the 3A West Regionals. They did, however, win the Prince George's County title earlier in January and remain well in the hunt for this year's state title, as well.

The Mount Hebron boys have also been a mainstay at the 3A state meet in the event, finishing sixth or higher at each indoor state meet since 2012 (including state titles in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 indoor seasons). The Vikings ran a season best and 3A #1 time at the 3A East Regionals last week and could be in position to win their third indoor 4x800 title in the past six seasons.

Meanwhile, the North Hagerstown boys won the 3A West Regionals after finishing fourth at last winter's 3A state meet. Their appearance at last year's state meet marked the first time that their boys' 4x800 relay had qualified for the indoor state championships since 2001. Similarly, the Bel Air boys are making a rare appearance at the indoor state meet, as many teams in Harford County don't run indoor track (or have small teams).
