With conference, county, and regional championships approaching, Saturday's Maryland XC Invitational at Shawan Downs will bring together many of the state's leading teams and individuals for another opportunity to measure themselves against strong competition.
The Black & Gold varsity races feature several programs that have already crossed paths this fall, along with individual contenders coming off impressive performances at Great American, Frank Keyser, Gettysburg and Bittersweet.
For some teams, Saturday offers a rematch, and for others, it is an opportunity to see how their early-season performances translate against a different field.
Girl's Black & Gold
The girls Black & Gold race features a strong collection of teams with plenty of great results so far this season.
Hereford entered October with consecutive victories over defending state champions, defeating Bethesda-Chevy Chase at Barnhart before edging Severna Park at Bull Run.
Now all three programs are entered at MDXC, setting up another opportunity to compare teams that could factor prominently into their respective championship races.
Hereford's lineup includes Dempsey Nelson, Kylie Jacobson and Charlie Brill, while Severna Park brings Siena Pegues and Lexi Fitzsimmons. Bethesda-Chevy Chase is led among its entries by Nya Stoian.
Mount de Sales could have something to say about the team race as well.
The Sailors enter with an impressive front three in Fiona Smith, Mary Bacinski and Eva Bacinski. Smith won last weekend's Bittersweet Invitational in 18:37.6, while the Bacinski sisters followed in 18:56.8 and 19:06.2.
That gives Mount de Sales three runners capable of competing near the front of Saturday's field, making the race an interesting test of how the leading teams' scoring groups match up.
Clarksburg senior Madeline Kelly arrives after one of the most impressive performances of last weekend, winning the three-mile Frank Keyser Invitational in 17:27.7 and breaking the previous Large School meet record by more than 40 seconds.
Kelly will face a field that includes Georgetown Day's Shira Wenthe, C. Milton Wright's Brielle Deaner, Mount de Sales' Fiona Smith, Crofton's Katelyn Waters and Wootton's Eleanor Finnegan.
Deaner finished eighth at Gettysburg in 18:34.1, while Smith is coming off her Bittersweet victory.
Severn Run sophomore Adriana Vastag is another name to watch. After winning Barnhart and finishing third at Bull Run, Vastag placed 78th in the Girls Race of Champions at Great American last weekend in 19:09.3.
Boys Black & Gold
The boys Black & Gold race is similarly competitive, with Crofton, Calvert Hall, Georgetown Prep and C. Milton Wright among the teams entered.
Crofton brings Jordan Gelineau and Scott Cunningham, giving the Cardinals two runners with strong performances already on the books this season.
Calvert Hall enters another competitive weekend after splitting its varsity lineup across two meets last Saturday. One group finished third in the Boys Race of Champions at Great American, while another won the Bittersweet Invitational on a sixth-runner tiebreaker over The Heights after both teams scored 65 points.
Several members of that Bittersweet-winning lineup, including George Shaffer, Max Ormerod and James Cullen, are entered at MDXC.
Georgetown Prep brings Gavin Beard, William Byford and Luke Stapleton, while C. Milton Wright arrives after finishing fourth at Gettysburg behind Nathan Bricker, Justin Bricker and Mason Fallica.
The individual race offers several compelling matchups of its own.
Beard won Bittersweet last weekend in 15:46.7, narrowly defeating Broadneck's Evan Whitford, who finished in 15:48.2. Both are entered at MDXC.
Oakdale's Patrick Salter also returns to competition after running 14:59.9 for three miles at Frank Keyser, where he finished just six-tenths of a second behind winner Ian Fisher.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase's Alec Mostofi and Bullis' Owen Heilman are among the other leading entrants.
Red & White Races Offer More Opportunities
The Red & White varsity divisions bring their own interesting fields.
On the boys side, Gilman enters with several young runners near the top of the listed performances, including sophomore Leo Bowen and freshman Benicio Benitez. Frederick and Middletown also bring competitive lineups.
Middletown is coming off a strong Frank Keyser Invitational, where the Knights won the Small School boys team title with 83 points.
The girls Red & White race includes Bryn Mawr, Maryvale Prep, Edgewood and Middletown among the teams to watch.
Middletown's girls enter following a Frank Keyser victory, having edged Glenelg 69-71 in the Small School team standings.
