With championship season approaching, many of Maryland's top cross country programs gathered at Shawan Downs on Saturday for the Maryland XC Invitational, one of the final major invitationals before conference and county championships begin.
The meet delivered several notable performances, including a dominant individual victory from Good Counsel's Amelia Avila, a strong showing from Severna Park's girls and Centennial boys.
Avila Runs Away With Girls Black & Gold Title
Good Counsel's Amelia Avila delivered one of the day's most impressive performances, winning the Girls Black & Gold race in 17:02.1. Last year Avila qualified for both NXN and Brooks.
Avila finished more than 36 seconds ahead of Georgetown Day's Shira Wenthe, who took second in 17:38.4. Clarksburg senior Madeline Kelly followed in third at 17:45.4, continuing her strong season after breaking the Frank Keyser Invitational's Large School three-mile meet record the previous weekend.
Thomas S. Wootton sophomore Eleanor Finnegan also broke 18 minutes, finishing fourth in 17:52.5.
While Avila controlled the individual race, Severna Park emerged on top of a highly anticipated team competition.
The Falcons scored 92 points to defeat Hereford (156), Centennial (191) and Bethesda-Chevy Chase (247).
The result was particularly significant given the teams' earlier meetings this season. Hereford had defeated Severna Park at Bull Run and Bethesda-Chevy Chase at Barnhart, but Saturday belonged to the Falcons.
Josephine Kamas led Severna Park with a ninth-place finish in 18:26.1, and the Falcons placed four runners among the top 21 overall.
Centennial Takes Boys Black & Gold Team Title
Centennial delivered one of the day's biggest team performances, winning the Boys Black & Gold championship with 155 points.
The Eagles finished ahead of Calvert Hall (206), Crofton (217) and Dulaney (244) in a field featuring several of Maryland's leading programs.
Junior Zedekiah Dong led Centennial with a runner-up finish in 15:26.2, just three seconds behind individual champion Rafi Hume of St. Albans.
Hume won the race in 15:23.2, emerging from a competitive field that included several athletes coming off strong performances at Great American, Gettysburg, Frank Keyser and Bittersweet.
Calvert Hall continued to demonstrate its depth as well. In addition to finishing second in Boys Black & Gold, the Cardinals won the boys JV team title with just 21 points, placing five scoring runners among the first seven scoring positions.
Three-Point Margins Decide Red & White Team Titles
The afternoon Red & White varsity races produced two of the closest team competitions of the day.
In the girls race, Maryvale Prep edged Edgewood 85-88, with Bryn Mawr close behind in third with 92 points. Just seven points separated the top three teams.
Mt Hebron's Charlotte Roder claimed the individual victory in 19:13.8.
The boys race was equally close, as Gilman defeated Middletown 108-111.
Middletown entered the weekend following its Small School team victory at the Frank Keyser Invitational, and the Knights added another competitive performance against a different field.
Hammond's Trevor Miyagishima won the individual title in 15:49.6.
Championship Season Awaits
With MDXC now complete, attention turns toward the conference and county championships beginning this week.
Saturday's results added new layers to several developing storylines and the next few weeks will determine how those performances translate when postseason titles are on the line.
