One of the most heavily affected regions of the changes, 3A South will undergo a transformation in 2017. Gone are the five Montgomery County teams from 2016, including the boys team champions from Wheaton. They will be replaced by five new teams from four different regions, the strongest being Digital Harbor and Chopticon. Neither school qualified full teams for the state championships last season but return strong runners on the boys' side: Digital Harbor's Ablel Gebreselase (17th at 4A states) and Chopticon's Tyler Modrzejewski (15th). Both could challenge the top returning runner, 2016 runner-up Greg Oldham, for the individual title next fall.

The meet will also probably have to find a new home next year with the 2015-16 host Watkins Mill moving to 3A West.
