Girls Runner of the Year 2006
Alison Smith, Senior
Atholton
Championships: Howard County -- #1 | 2A South -- #1 | 2A State -- #1
Four years of racing, although at times plagued by injury and circumstance, adds Atholton senior Alison Smith's name to a list of the best runners ever to race in Maryland. As she ends a high school racing career that can easily be compared to that of Broadneck's Lauren Centrowitz, she leaves with 10 championship titles - among them 4 Howard County titles, 3 Region 2A-East titles and 3 2A-State titles. Alison Smith ran to the front of the pack as a sophomore and never let go.

Smith began her senior season with an entry in the Howard County Invitational, but she was unable to finish that race due to an injury that would take her out for a large portion of the season. Recognition of Alison Smith slid to a halt, just as sophomore Kristen Malloy (Hereford, 'Runner-Up' of the Year) was running unbelievable races, including a performance at Bull Run that only implied Malloy to be unbeatable in the state. After a transition race at the Run From the Lion's Den, Alison Smith returned to attention with a totally unexpected performance at the Manhattan Invitational, beating Eleanor Roosevelt's top two girls Marika Walker and Teshika Rivers, who at the time were ranked second and fourth in the state.

She confirmed her return as one of the state's best with strong wins at county and region championships, leaving no doubt that the athlete was more prepared for the state meet than she had ever been. Fate would have it that the reigning 2A champion would have to face the state's top ranked athlete in order to grab the title one last time - Kristen Malloy. Going into the race opinion was split on who would take the race - Alison Smith had her impeccable championship record and experience, while Malloy had the course record and home course advantage. Whether Kristen Malloy just had a bad day, or Alison Smith just too strong, Smith took the race.

Alison Smith is Maryland State's 2006 Runner of the Year.

Girls 'Runner-Up' of the Year 2006
Kristen Malloy, Sophomore
Hereford
Championships: Baltimore County -- #1 | 2A State -- #3
Just as many all-state members secured their spots thanks to outstanding performances at the conclusion of the season, Kristen Malloy secures hers thanks to her performances earlier in the season. This year's all-state 'Runner-Up' of the Year now holds course records at Hereford High School (site of Bull Run Invitational and State Championships) and Blobs Park (site of Meade Autumn Classic) with phenomenal times of 18:40 and 17:46.49, respectively.

Malloy came into her sophomore cross country season fueled from a very sucessful freshman year that could easily label her a bubbling-under athlete. Malloy secured her first state title with an 11:18.65 in the 3200m at the conclusion of last year's indoor track season, but otherwise spent her first year in competitive running just behind the top runners in the state. Malloy's breakthrough came at the start of this year's cross country season, following in the footsteps of other stand-out athletes in cross country - athletes such as Tenke Zoltani (Dulaney), Karen Pulliam (Quince Orchard) and Lauren Centrowitz (Broadneck)

Malloy kicked-off her season with a sub-19:00 time at Barnhardt Invitational and did not go above that mark at any invitational or championship meet for the rest of the season until the state final. Fueled by an undefeated and unchallenged season, Malloy was perfectly set to break her own record and stop Atholton's Alison Smith from winning a third state title, but failed to do so - finishing third in 20:06. Despite the evident burn-out the athlete suffered, her incredible performances set her apart as this season's Runner-Up of the Year.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 3

Marika Walker, Senior
Eleanor Roosevelt
Championships: Prince George's County -- #1 | 4A State -- #1
The two-year state champion executed a (though well-expected) flawless performance at the state final, despite a season that isolated her from the bullk of her competition. Walker lost only once to a Maryland runner this season - to Atholton's Alison Smith at the Manhattan Invitational. Marika Walker's state championship time of 19:14.60 was the fastest of the day.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 4

Katie Hursey, Senior
North Carroll
Championships: MVAL Chesapeake -- #1 | Carroll County -- #1 | 3A West -- #1 | 3A State -- #2
Hursey's only in-state loss this year came at the very conclusion of the season, when a cunning race by season-long competitor Liz McCarter (Mount Hebron) caught Hursey off guard, preventing her from capturing her second state title. Overall the athlete had a sucessful season, one that included four season wins over Liz McCarter.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 5

Morgane Gay, Junior
Walt Whitman
Championships: Montgomery County -- #1 | 4A West -- #2 | 4A State -- #2
Morgane Gay, now frequently considered to be one of the most underrated athletes in the state, scored a surprise win at the Montgomery County Championships that launched an ideal championship campaign. The county win came after regular season losses to county athletes like Cara Harrison (Quince Orchard) and Emma Eckerstrom (Northwest) - both of whom she soundly defeated at all three championship meets. Gay is one of just two First Team All-State members that are not graudating seniors.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 6

Elizabeth McCarter, Senior
Mount Hebron
Championships: Howard County -- #3 | 3A East -- #1 | 3A State -- #1
After spending an entire season second to North Carroll's Katie Hursey, along with a few other 3A athletes, McCarter thrust herself to the very top with her regional and state performances, both of which she was named champion of. McCarter competed in more meets than any other First Team All-State runner this season, winning several of them. Her consistent work this season bodes well for her indoor and outdoor track campaigns.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 7

Cara Harrison, Senior
Quince Orchard
Championships: Montgomery County -- #2 | 4A West -- #3 | 4A State -- #3
Cara Harrison, along with several other athletes on first team this year, helped display the talent of the class of 2007 this season. As a senior Harrison executed a very sucessful season, improving greatly upon her previous three seasons. A full schedule allowed her to gain experience competing out of state, and only helped her to exceed expectations in the championship season. Her time of 19:23.90 at the state championships was the third fastest of the day.

Second Team
Elyse Borisko, Sophomore
Howard
The athlete had an impressive state championship race, in which she was the last of just 8 girls to clock under 20:00. She was the 2A State Runner-Up, second to Alison Smith, defeating Kristen Malloy.

Louise Hanallah, Junior
Winston Churchill
Hanallah leads the Second Team All-State girls roster, thanks to a superb ending to an already solid season. The junior often gets overlooked in the influx of talent that comes from Montgomery County, but her finishing time of 19:31.70, although still only the third best from Montgomery County, was the fifth best in the state.

Liya Kasimova, Junior
Severna Park
Severna Park's best had a bumpy season, but had several impressive showings, the most notable being her win at the Anne Arundel County Championships.

Katie Ogden, Senior
Northern
The Calvert County runner finally found the winner's circle this year, winning the SMAC and Region 3A South titles, on top of her regular-season win at the Brunswick Invitational.

Teshika Rivers, Sophomore
Eleanor Roosevelt
Although suspension from her squad prevented Rivers from competing in any championship races, her strong performances at the Maymount and Manhattan Invitationals secures her a spot on second team.

Halsey Sinclair, Senior
Blair
The 7x championship titleist had a surprisingly strong season, despite dissapointing losses at the Montgomery County and State Championships. She clocked at 19:25 at the Bull Run Invitational, second there only to Kristen Malloy's record-breaking run.

Angeli Sivaraman, Senior
Centennial
Sivaraman had a great senior season, culminating with her 2nd and 4th place finishes in the Region 3A East and State Championships.

Third Team

Northwest

Mary Fromme, Sophomore
South River

Katie Harman, Sophomore

Christopher Moen, Junior

Boy's Runner of the Year 2006

Matthew Centrowitz, Senior
Broadneck
Championships: Anne Arundel County -- #1 | Region 4A East -- #1 | 4A State -- #1
Matthew Gerald Centrowitz is undefeated in cross country championship races; he has taken titles in all 8 that he has entered in. Beginning with his unexpected wins as a sophomore - defeating Will Eden (Annapolis) to win his first county championship (and stop Eden from becoming AA's first ever three-time winner), and going on to defeat race-favorite Andrew Jesien (Walter Johnson) for a first state championship. Since his first championship-sweep in 2004, Matthew Centrowitz did not lose to a single Maryland athlete in two full seasons.

He will graduate this year with a simple label: undefeatable.

Although his school entered a good number of races this season, Centrowitz only competed in three, missing out on big invitationals such as Barnhardt and Bull Run. It should be viewed as a favor to those race's eventual winners. Of the races he did run, nobody ever came within 30 seconds of him - usually second place finishers were much further behind.

Centrowitz is Anne Arundel County's only male three time winner, repeating a feat his older sister acchomplished in 2003.

Matthew's seventh championship race and win gave him his first chance to break 15:00 in his career; he ran a 14:38.0 at the Region 4A East Finals.

The athlete headed into the state final hoping to break a well circumvented course record of 16:00 that he came within one second of as a junior. A combination of unseasonably warm weather and a trip-up in the last 500m of the course, he ended his Maryland cross country career with a dissapointing 16:02, but as a triple state champion. He leaves holding two of the top five Hereford times.

Matthew Centrowitz's last hoorah in cross country, with a little luck, will not be at the Footlocker Northeast Regional. Centrowitz hopes to become Maryland's first male qualifier in the race this Saturday, gaining an invite to compete in the National Championships in San Diego.

Matthew Centrowitz is Maryland State's 2006 Runner of the Year.

Boy's 'Runner-Up' of the Year 2006

Robert Wetzel, Senior
Archibishop Spalding
Championships: MIAA -- #1 | MD/DC Private -- #2
Robert Wetzel made his rise to the top similarly to the way many before him have - a steady foundation laid out during 9th and 10th grade to lead way to a strong junior year competing at the same level as many graduating seniors, in turn propelling a larger-than-life senior season. Robert Wetzel got the state's attention earlier in the season and hung on until the end.

Wetzel's junior year indoor and outdoor track campaigns foreshadowed the success he found this season. He grabbed MIAA 3200m crowns in both indoor and outdoor track, improving on his second place finish at MIAA's cross country final.

Wetzel's realization as one of the state's best came on September 9 at the Barnhardt Invitational - where he won against a deep field of competitors in a time 15:48.5, also his first sub-16:00 time. He built on this success with another sub-16 time at the Knights Invitational, losing there only to Matthew Centrowitz.

These two early season performances were just the prelude to the greatest achievement of Wetzel's cross country career, and also the biggest mark he leaves behind - his win at the Bull Run Invitational. His time there of 16:03 is incredible on several counts - the mark is just three seconds short of the course record and is only one second slower than state champion Matthew Centrowitz's time at this year's public schools state final. The time was 20 seconds faster than All-State No. 3 pick Andrew Revelle (Atholton) and equal to that run at the same meet by Steven Duplinsky (Georgetown Prep) one year prior. Clearly, this run was no small feat for Wetzel. Wetzel rounded off his season with a win at the MIAA Championships, and a second place finish at the MD/DC Private Schools Championships, losing only to D.C.'s Nick Bax.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 3

Andrew Revelle, Senior
Atholton
Championships: Howard County -- #1 | 2A South -- #1 | 2A State -- #1
Andrew Revelle, arguably the state's toughest competitor, became a three-time state champion on November 11, while managing a 16:16.24 that was the stand-alone second fastest time of the day. This phenomenal showing was the culmination of an already successful championship season in which Revelle secured a third title in Howard County and Region 2A South. Revelle also had an outstanding regular season, which included his winning time of 15:26 at the Harford Invite an a second place finish at the Bull Run Invitational with a time of 16:23. Revelle leaves a huge mark on Maryland Cross Country as he graduates this year.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 4

Erik Anderson, Senior
Archibishop Curley
Championships: MIAA -- #2 | DC/MD Private -- #3 |
An effective season that interwove competition against public schools with that against private schools secured Anderson's name as one of the top runners in the state. He clocked the third fastest time of the day at the Bull Run Invitational and won the Bobcat Invite - prior to his runner-up performance in the MIAA Championships (second to Archibishop Spalding's Robert Wetzel). Anderson ran a PR of 15:46 this season.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 5

Christopher Moen, Junior
Walter Johnson
Championships: Montgomery County -- #1 | 4A West -- #1 | 4A State -- #4
This break-through athlete, despite a discouraging state performance, logged several impressive performances this season, including a win over Atholton's Andrew Revelle and the Howard County Invite and a county title in Montgomery County. Christopher Moen will be the top returning athlete in the state next season, a favorite to become Matthew Centrowitz's successor.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 6

Dwight Parker, Senior
Woodlawn
Championships: Baltimore County -- #1 | 4A North -- #1 | 4A State -- #2
Provoking controversy over whether 2004 and 2005 Baltimore County Champion Dwight Parker would be able to repeat for a third year, the athlete did not participate in a single invitational this season, and his appearances at Baltimore County league meets did not do anything for his reputation. He returned to the state arena at his county championships, where he defeated Dulaney's Vince Walsh for the title, doing so again at the Region 4A Finals. He was second only to Matthew Centrowitz at the state finals, clocking a time of 16:31.13.

First Team All-State; Pick No. 7

Kelli Thibou, Senior
Eleanor Roosevelt
Championships: Prince George's County -- #1 | 4A South -- #1 | 4A State -- #3
Although Thibou was only given one chance to compete against the bulk of Maryland's top competitors, he certainly rose the occasion. Finishing less than a second behind Woodlawn's Dwight Parker, Thibou's time of 16:31.93 was not that far behind former-teammate and First Team All-State runner Mikias Gelagle's time at the state championships last season. Thibou also had a good showing earlier this season at the Maymount Invitational, where he clocked a time just seconds short of Christopher Moen's.

Second Team

Chris Barnard, Senior
Sherwood
The Montgomery County veteran finished as county runner-up for the second year, also placing third at the 4A North Regional Meet.

Graham Bazell, Sophomore
Atholton
The state's standout underclassman had a rough end to the season, but still had several impressive showings, including runner-up in Howard County and Region 2A South.

Christopher Bowie, Senior
Bethesda-Chevy Chase
The 3A State Champion leads Second Team All-State, thanks to his unprecedented regional and state wins.

Ryan Bowser, Junior
Northern Garrett
The often overlooked athlete from Western Maryland had two highly successful visits to Hereford, his second securing him the 1A State title.

Kyle Gaffney, Senior
Blake
Despite a playoff season dilluted by injury, the senior was among the top five in the state for most of the season. He earned titles in the large race at the Bull Run Invitational, the Doc Jones Invitational as well as the Run from the Lion's Den.

Michael Tousley, Senior
Bethesda-Chevy Chase
His third place finish at the Montgomery County Championships showed the depth of this runner, who led teammate Christopher Bowie most of the season. Dissapointing finishes at regional and state championships prevented him from ending the season on a high note.

Vince Walsh, Senior
Dulaney
The athlete had a breakout season, giving Dwight Parker a run for his money at both the Baltimore County and 4A North championships. Finished sixth in the 4A State Final.
