Maryland Weekend Rundown - Indoor Week #1

Terry Baker Invitational

December 04, 2015 @ Hagerstown College in Hagerstown, Md

Girls Highlights:

  • Maryvale Prep junior Emily Craig opened up her indoor season after a stellar cross country running stellar times at the Terry Baker Invite to run away from the field in both the 1600 and 800. Craig's 5:14.74 win in the 1600 is an initial state leading time, while her 2:24.94 victory in the 800 ranks #2 in the state. Teammate Kendall Gray (2nd, 2:28.98) went 1-2 with her in the 800 as well.
  • The girls 55 meter dash was virtually a dead heat to the human eye between Tuscarora junior Camryn Blake and Frederick sophomore Jaida Smith both timed at 7.30 in the final heat, but the F.A.T. timing separated their finishes by a thousandths of a second gave the win to Blake. Blake also was a winner earlier in the meet in the 300 meter dash with a 43.09 clocking.
  • Urbana had a freshmen in Shaye Morrell take second in the 300 meter dash at 43.92, which she also ran a leg on the winning 4x200 meter relay who topped Blake's Tuscarora squad (2nd, 1:52.54) with the best time overall among the 6 sections in 1:50.73.
  • Urbana's youth movement is strong as shown also in the 500 meter dash with another freshmen in Susannah Auderset winning the event with a MD #3 time of 1:22.56.
  • Urbana also had top performers in the field events with sophomore Hannah Walasik clearing 9'6" to win the pole vault and junior Delia Sipe launching a throw of 36'1" for first place in the shot put.
  • In the girls 3200 meter run, Middletown's Reilly Caldwell got off to a fast start to separate from a field by a wide margin early including the likes of Boonsboro's Haley Wright. Wright was treating the race as a workout going out 6:07 for the first mile then closing with 5:28 last mile for an incredible negative split. However, Wright gave too much room early to catch Caldwell, who won in state best time of 11:29.18. Wright, second in 11:35, anchored the Boonsboro girls earlier to the win in the 4x800 meter relay (10:35.40) with a 2:24 split.
  • Oakdale senior Alaina McCracken was the only hurdler in the meet to dip under 9 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles as she showed herself at a level above the rest in the final section blowing away with the field with a 8.99 clocking.
  • An outstanding high jump competition on Friday night at Hagerstown Community College with Middletown senior Felicia Clements and Brunswick sophomore Rosie Cicmanec both clearing a first weekend state leading height of 5'4", but earlier misses giving first place to the senior Clements.

Boys Highlights:

  • Despite running out of the slow sections entered with no time, Smithsburg's Micah Daigneault was able to post the top time in both the 500 and 1000 with swift solo efforts of 1:09.61 and 2:05.98.
  • Oakdale's Evan Kowalk was the winner of the seeded section of the 800 (2:09.45), but was bested by Daigneault's time earlier. Kowalk was the fastest overall earlier in the meet in the 1600 meter run as he was able to roar past South Hagerstown's Darren Harman and Urbana's Nick Danner on the final lap for a 4:40.42 victory.
  • Oakdale went 1-3 in the boys 300 meter dash with Percy Agyei-Obese edging out Urbana's Parker Mellott in the fast section with a time of 37.31, while teammate Kenny Yerardi won the previous section in 38.19 for the third fastest time overall. Agyei-Obese and Yerardi also ran on the Oakdale 4x200 meter relay, which ran away with the event with the fastest time by 3 seconds at 1:38.21.
  • A battle between teammates at the end of the 3200 with Winters Mill junior Devon Caples passing Winters Mill senior Taylor Russell at the line with both runners timed at 10:33.
  • Winters Mill also had another individual winner in the boys 55 meter hurdles with senior Matt O'Brien able to steal the event from a slower section with his 8.33 clocking. Good Counsel senior Ian Davis had probably initially thought his 8.41 clocking in the final section would hold up, but not so fast with O'Brien, an outdoor state qualifier in the 110 meter hurdles, taking the win.
  • In a race for initial bragging rights of fastest in Frederick County, Marquis Lauer put his early stamp on that title with a swift 6.69 clocking over Oakdale's Agyei-Obese (2nd, 6.69) and Urbana's Xavier Campbell (3rd, 6.83) in the 55 meter dash.  Lauer was a 2A West Region runner-up in the 100 last spring with a 11.12 personal best.
  • Three competitors 6'2" in the boys high jump, but earlier misses gave the tiebreaker to Gov. Thomas Johnson's Dominique Anderson over Century's Alex Stefanick and the hurdles champ O'Brien of Winters Mill.
  • Another good competition found vertically at Hagerstown on Friday night with Westminster senior Alex Hall and Oakdale senior George Stultz with both clearing 12 feet. Hall ultimately was the event winner in matching his personal best from last spring when he finished 5th in the 3A state competition.
  • Boonsboro boys closed out the meet in impressive style taking the 4x400 meter relay with a 3:38 performance on the Hagerstown Community College' 200 meter track.
  • Frederick junior Demarcus Core started off his season with a three foot PR in the shot put winning the throwing event at the Terry Baker Invite with a mark of 44'04.50". Core had a previous best of 41'5.25".
