On Monday, we paid a visit to McDonogh School sophomore Dalton Hengst for a Workout Wednesday shoot in preparation for his mile race at the Flo Golden South Classic. Chasing after that Golden Ticket and spot in the Brooks PR Invitational, the 4:10 miler Hengst prepped for his race coming up on Saturday evening in Clermont, Florida with the following workout:
The Workout
800- 2:15
400-61
400-61
400-61
200- 29
200- 30
200- 29
200- 28
Active rest in between each repeat. 2 minutes rest after each 800/400. A minute to 90 seconds rest after each 200.
With a sub 4 minute mile becoming more common with pair of high school runners breaking the barrier the time in last two years, could the 16 year old sophomore Hengst be the next prep dipping under the mark in 2017 or 2018? He's the fastest 10th grader and underclassmen in the country currently with his 4:10.43 full mile performance at the New York Relays last month.
Forget about the long term goals for now, earning a spot in the Brooks PR Invitational is the next feat to accomplish for this talented young distance runner.
