Former Maryland HS Sprint Star Olivia Ekpone To Represent Nigeria At Olympics

Olivia Ekpone, who starred at both Northwest and Thomas S. Wootton in her high school track days within Montgomery County, Maryland will be competing in the Rio Olympics this coming week for the African nation of Nigeria in the 4x100 meter relay.

After a decorated high school career winning numerous state titles and setting many records with high school PR's of 6.96 in the 55, 11.60 in the 100, 38.96 in the 300, 53.15 in the 400, Ekpone only continued to improve even more at the next level collegiately at Texas A&M.

The 200 has turned out to be Ekpone's specialty after high school as she won the SEC outdoor title back in 2014 with a 22.23 clocking. She finished second at the Nigerian Olympic Trials earlier this summer, but was unable to hit the Olympic standard to be qualified to compete in the individual event in the Olympics. However, her finish in the 100 and 200 finals at the Nigerian Olympic Trials has secured herself a spot on the 4x100 meter relay in Rio.

Make sure to watch Ekpone's Olympic debut in the 4x100 meter relay for Nigeria, which will be on Thursday, August 18th at 10:20 AM. NBC's live stream of the track & field session including the women's 4x100 prelims can be accessed HERE starting at 8:30 AM ET on August 18th.
