Catoctin senior Julien Webster was the small school division champion at last year's Brunswick Invitational; she finished second overall to Oakland Mills' Brit Lang. This year, she left no doubt as to who was the top girls runner at the meet, regardless of division. Her final time on the three-mile course was 18:18.20, more than a minute and a half faster than the next-fastest runner in either the large or small schools divisions. After a seventh place finish at last year's state meet - plus a runner-up finish in the 1,600 during the spring - Webster will be one of the contenders for this year's title.

Webster wasn't the only one making a statement at Saturday's meet, however. The Urbana girls - led by freshman Sara Jarman, who won the large school division - easily defeated the defending 3A champions from Centennial. Six of their seven runners finished in the top 18 in their division, including three in the top ten.

The Urbana girls also showed their depth, winning the JV race. While the Northern girls still look like the team to beat in the 3A classification, the Urbana girls certainly showed why they're legitimate contenders for this year's 3A championships as well.

Over on the boys side, the eyes were on Micah Hewitson and Nick Tilson as the top 3A and 2A returnees, respectively. After opening with a 4:42 mile, Hewitson noted that he paid for it in the third mile, during which Westlake's Jay Hall took the opportunity and ran with it. Hall won the 2A indoor 3,200 last winter, and after beating Tilson to kick off this season, he is looking more and more like a contender for the 2A title.

As for Hewitson, he would still finish in third place with a solid 15:55 time on the three-mile course. His teammate, Michael Belmaggio, finished second, showing that their 1-2 duo could be one of the best in the state this season as it was last spring.

Tilson led his Liberty boys to a victory in the large school race over Northwest. The defending 2A state champions looked the part on Saturday, placing four runners in the top ten of the large school division. While the Century and Calvert boys both have strong teams heading into 2016, it looks like Liberty is still the team to beat in the 2A classification this year.
