Second day of action from the 2017 MPSSAA Track & Field State Championships kicks off on Friday with the 3A and 4A schools converging at Morgan State University in Baltimore. Both Thursday and Friday's running events will be LIVE streamed on MileSplit.com with archived coverage as well of those races.
Lets take a look at each race on Friday at the Maryland State Meet. There will be 3 finals section on time contested in the 4x800 meter relay, 3200 meter run, and 4x200 meter relay on Thursday. Meanwhile, preliminary rounds of the 100 meter dash, 100/110 meter hurdles, and 200 meter dash will also be run.
3A Girls 4x800m Relay (Finals) - The Damascus girls own the top 4x800 time in Maryland heading into this year's state championships. They will be seeking to avenge their fourth-place finish last spring and their runner-up finish this past indoor season. They're very familiar with their opponents from Urbana, who have won the past two 3A 4x800 state titles and beat Damascus at the 3A West Regionals. Don't count out the Mount Hebron girls, either - they ran the same exact time as Urbana in their victory at the 3A East Regionals.
4A Girls 4x800m Relay (Finals) - Three 4A teams have run under 9:40 this season and it's a safe bet that a few more will at the state championships on Friday. The Whitman girls will be looking to complete the county-regional-state meet sweep, as will Severna Park. Both teams have faced stiff competition: Whitman in both the defending outdoor state champions from Bethesda-Chevy Chase and indoor state champions Northwest, and Severna Park from the South River girls.
3A Boys 4x800m Relay (Finals) - The Oxon Hill boys ran one of the fastest 4x800s in state history at the Penn Relays this year and haven't been threatened by a Maryland team so far this season. The Clippers could be going after the overall state meet record of 7:44.67. If there is one team that could challenge the defending state champions it's Oakdale, who holds the MD #2 time of 7:50.69. As long as the weather is fine this could be one of the fastest 4x800s in state meet history.
4A Boys 4x800m Relay (Finals) - The past four 4A state 4x800 races have seen four different winners (Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Blair, Howard and Paint Branch). Friday's race could extend that streak as Northwest enters with the fastest time in 4A this season (7:53.00). The defending indoor state champions from B-CC also broke eight minutes at the 4A West Regionals and won't go lightly at the state meet. With three more teams having already gone under 8:05 this season it wouldn't be a surprise to see more than two go under 8:00.
3A Girls 100m Dash (Prelims) - Frederick's Jaida Smith seized the title of "fastest girl in 3A" last spring and hasn't given it back. She owns a season best of 11.84 in the 100, while Baltimore City College's Kayla Barnes sits second among the 3A rankings at 12.08. The 3A state meet record is 11.81, set back in 2009, and could be in jeopardy if conditions are right this weekend.
4A Girls 100m Dash (Prelims) - C.H. Flowers senior and defending state champion Pharist O'Neal went off at the 4A South Regionals, dropping a big personal best and MD #3 time of 11.80. Her biggest challenger will probably be Northwest sophomore Taylor Wright who breezed through the Montgomery County and 4A West Regional championships.
3A Boys 100m Dash (Prelims) - Baltimore Poly's William Henderson didn't win the 100 at the 3A North Regionals but enters the state meet with the fastest 100 meter dash time among public school athletes (10.66). Henderson will have plenty of competition as four other boys in 3A enter with season bests under 10.90, led by Northeast junior Davon Carroll at 10.72.
4A Boys 100m Dash (Prelims) - Kennedy's Raynard Bell has lost just one 100 meter race since the calendar flipped to April and owns the top time in 4A this season. He will be going head-to-head against Wise's Anthony Lytton who ran nearly the same time as Bell at their respective regional meets. Also in the mix is Bell's former teammate Ewoch Owumi, now running at Montgomery Blair.
3A Girls 100m Hurdles (Prelims) - Two-time state champion Nadia Hackett from Baltimore Poly is currently fourth in the state in the 100 hurdles and the top-ranked girl in 3A. She holds a sizeable season best advantage over her fellow 3A competitors Hannah Meredith from Frederick and Jennica Terry from James M. Bennett.
4A Girls 100m Hurdles (Prelims) - One of the most wide-open events set for this weekend's state meet, there is no clear favorite for the 4A girls 100 meter hurdles. Northwest's Eddita Pessima ran 14.53 and has gone undefeated in both hurdle events since the end of March, but Kenydi McWilliams (14.53), Kaya Rae Dunbar (14.65) and Nafisat Adeyemi (14.75) are all significant challengers to the top-ranked girl in 4A.
3A Boys 110m Hurdles (Prelims) - The top 110 meter hurdler in the state, William Henderson made it known that he was going to shoot for Dondre Echols' state meet record of 13.59. Henderson owns the top time in the state this season at 14.02 and is easily the favorite heading into the meet.
4A Boys 110m Hurdles (Prelims) - Can the Parkdale duo of Tyrone Bryan and Chisom Onukwugha keep it going through the state meet? They haven't missed a beat since finishing 1-2 in the 55 meter hurdles at the indoor state championship and easily rank as the top two hurdlers in the 4A classification heading into this weekend.
3A Girls 200m Dash (Prelims) - With Tylar Colbert and Cameron Hinton not running the 200, Jaida Smith stands as the only girl in 3A to have gone under 25 seconds this year that will be running the event at the state meet. It would be a shock if Smith doesn't emerge victorious in the finals of both the 100 and the 200 on Saturday.
4A Girls 200m Dash (Prelims) - Once again Flowers' Pharist O'Neal will be the favorite after clocking a MD #2 24.27 at the 4A South Regionals this past weekend. The state meet record of 23.64 may be out of reach, but O'Neal will definitely be going all-out knowing that every point will matter for the Flowers girls as they shoot for the team title this weekend.
3A Boys 200m Dash (Prelims) - Dundalk's Yourry Tapande, the 300 meter indoor state champion, enters Friday with the fastest current 200 among 3A competitors and hasn't lost a 200 race this season. However, he's not without company; both Aaron Robinson and Davon Carroll have gone under 22 seconds in the event so far this season as well.
4A Boys 200m Dash (Prelims) - High Point's Ken Nelson broke out in a huge way at the 4A South Regionals where he dropped a MD #1 21.38 in the 200. Even with four more boys entering the meet with sub-22.00 season bests - including the duo from the 100, Raynard Bell and Anthony Lytton - Nelson will be the favorite coming into Friday's action.
3A Girls 3200m Run (Finals) - The Northern girls went 1-2-3 in the 3200 at the indoor state meet, but such a feat will be much harder to accomplish on Friday. Senior Molly Barrick will still be the favorite alongside teammate Abby Sweeney, but a field that includes Poolesville sophomore Nandini Satsangi and Great Mills senior Annie Imhof will be much harder to break up.
4A Girls 3200m Run (Finals) - We haven't seen The Matchup since the indoor state meet, when Abigail Green and Maria Coffin traded victories in the 1600 and 3200. Both girls will be fresh for the 3200, and don't expect the race to turn into a sit-and-kick. The 20-plus-year-old state meet record of 10:15.79 may be a bit out of reach, but sub-10:30 will not be out of the question. The field still remains deep after that, led by Severna Park's Kamryn Eveleth (season best 11:00.13).
3A Boys 3200m Run (Finals) - Northern's Charlie Sweeney has the top seed time entering the meet, but the favorite will have to be Poolesville junior Ryan Lockett after his 4:16/9:28 double at the Montgomery County Championships. Even if he runs the 4x800 beforehand, Lockett has had no trouble in doubling this year. Look for a controlled seven laps and all-out last lap.
4A Boys 3200m Run (Finals) - Rohann Asfaw owns the top 3200 by a Maryland public school runner this season. Bethesda-Chevy Chase's Adam Nakasaka took him down at the Montgomery County Championships when Asfaw was coming off of the 1600, but a fresh Asfaw will be hard to unseat as the two-time defending state champion in the event.
3A Girls 4x200m Relay (Finals) - The Baltimore City College girls uncorked a 3A-class-leading 1:41.28 4x200 at the 3A North Regionals to set themselves as the favorite for the event, but the race should be close. Both Mount Hebron and Blake have gone under 1:42 this season already as well, with Baltimore Poly, Franklin and Watkins Mill not far behind.
4A Girls 4x200m Relay (Finals) - The 4A South Regionals produced the three-fastest 4x200 times so far this season among 4A times, as Bowie led the way with a MD #2 1:39.71. Flowers is next as 1:40.18, and with no other team within two seconds of them, this could quickly turn into a two-team race.
3A Boys 4x200m Relay (Finals) - Oxon Hill currently leads all 3A teams by over a second at 1:28.03. Their relay dominance is just another factor in their quest for yet another 3A team title. 3A North Regionals champions from Edgewood are led by senior transfer Jaquez Torian, and 3A West contenders Oakdale and Westminster will keep the pressure on the Clippers to stay on their "A" game.
4A Boys 4x200m Relay (Finals) - Get ready for another exciting showdown between Northwest (the only team in 4A to have gone under 1:28 this season) and Springbrook (right behind them at 1:28.23). Paint Branch and Bowie have also gone under 1:29 this spring, and it might take a sub-1:29.50 just to score at the meet this year.
