Broadneck's Elian Ahmar emerged as one of the better throwers in the state last spring as a junior. In his first season he cleared both 45 feet in the shot put and 120 feet in the discus, and qualified for the state championships. All told it was a solid first season in the circle. But few could have imagined what would happen this year.
Ahmar came out firing this winter, throwing 54 feet on December 12th. He won the shot put that day, and he went on to win every shot put competition he competed in this winter, sweeping counties, regionals and states. Even some of the best throwers around the country could not stop him, as he won the Emerging Elite competition at New Balance Indoor Nationals by over three feet.
Not only did he win, but he topped the old Emerging Elite meet record by over a foot. Ahmar's throw of 59'10.50 is four feet better than any other Maryland competitor has thrown all winter and the third-best on MileSplit's leaderboard (since 2000). He ranks just 12th among returners in the event from last spring but has clearly made himself the man to beat in the shot put (and possibly the discus) this spring.
