Comparing athletes across several season's worth of results and times is tricky; some teams run mainly three mile races, others mostly 5Ks. Some teams run exclusively in the Appalachian Mountains all year, while others hardly ever encounter hills throughout the fall.

However, there has been one constant equalizer in Maryland state cross country history: the Hereford cross country course. The course change during the 2013 season due to school construction has slightly diminished the difficulty of the course, but there is still no course as revered in the state as the one at Hereford.
