Micah Meekins ended her junior track season with one of the best performances that the 2A state meet has seen over the past decade. Meekins swept all three sprint events at the state meet, becoming just the second individual girls state champion in Marriotts Ridge High School history. That was the stage she set entering the 2016 indoor season, when she made her debut at the Howard County Winter Festival.
The meet record in the 300 meter dash had been set three years prior by Wootton's Gwen Shaw, who had run 40.75 in December 2012. Meekins, meanwhile, had finished her previous indoor season by clocking a personal-best 40.79 in the 300 at the 2A state meet. Clearly, the stage was set for Meekins to take a crack at the meet record in the 300. The race itself was a good one, as Maryvale Prep sophomore Cameron Hinton nearly joined Meekins - who ran 40.72 - in breaking the meet record. Later that season, Meekins would become the first girl to break 40 seconds in the 300 meter dash at the 2A indoor state meet, a record that would not fall until last year.
