Oakland Mills impressed everyone at the 2A State Championships as the scorpions won both team titles, multiple individual state wins, and set two new state records. The boys scored 110 points 61 points ahead of runner-up Liberty. Scoring triple-digit points at the State meet is a huge accomplishment, and they could have scored more if they didn't have some bad luck in the 4x200 dropping the baton.

The Scorpians had 6 individual champions. Trevin McHargh (55), Shane King (300) Abdur Hassan (High Jump and 55m Hurdles), Ethan Aidam (3200), and the 4x400m Relay.

Liberty took home second-place honors with 49 points. Tyler Edson ran 4 events and shined in all of them. He won both the 500 and 800m runs and then joined his teammates on the 4x800 relay which earned first place and on the 4x400m relay which placed 4th.

Oakland Mills girls team also walked away with the team title, but the competition on the girls side was much closer. Several teams were in the hunt for the girl's 2A crown late into the night. Middletown and Hereford had strong performances. Ava Allen won the Pole Vault for Middletown and Hayley Lucido had a strong night finishing second in both the 500 and the 800 running 2:21. Hereford shined in the distance races and the Snider sisters placed 2nd and 3rd in both the 1600 and 3200, scoring 28 points in just those two events.

However, at the end of the meet, it was Century who gave Oakland Mills the biggest test. The Knights scored points in 8 of the 13 events. They started strong in the 4x800 relay upsetting Hereford by running 9:55 for the win. Alayna Gifford who was on that 4x800 team also won the individual 800m in a new personal best time of 2:20. The meet came down to the last event, Pole Vault, which lasted till almost 9:30 at night. Century was winning by .5 points heading into the event, and had several vaulters in the competition, however Oakland Mills vaulter, Rosalie Rosenburg jumped 10-6, to place second, to secure the team win.

Oakland Mills was led by first-year sprinter Oluwasemilori Olakunle who won the 55m dash in 7.07 seconds, which ended up being a new 2A record and the fastest time out of any classification. She also placed second in the 55m Hurdles. The Scorpians picked up wins in the 4x200 relay, 4x400 relay, and a 3rd place finish in the High Jump by Valerie Ashamu

Individually Temi Ariyo from Overlea shined in the distance events as she won both the 1600 and 3200. In both races, she started relaxed and slowly picked up the pace each lap. Ariyo, who is participating in her first indoor season, has the ability to outsprint anyone in the last lap and showed that ability in both races!

The highlight for the scorpions, if you had to pick just one, came during a 5-minute span when Trevin McHargh and Oluwasemilore Olakunie both broke the 2A 55m Dash State Records. McHargh ran 6.39 seconds besting the previous record of 6.42 set in 2013 by Ricardo Griggs. Olakunie shocked both herself and her coaches when she ran 7.07 seconds, a personal best of .21 seconds, which in a 55 at that level, is a massive PR. The previous record was 7.11 seconds set by Cierra Layne from Edmondson in 2003.

After the meet, MD MileSplit caught up with Oakland Mills coach, Chris Brewington, to hear his thoughts on how his teams performed. "Im extremely proud of the boys for being able to handle all of the pressure and all of the expectations that were put on them this year and come out and lived up and exceeded those expectations. The Girls showed incredible resilience. Losing counties by 10 points, losing Regionals by 11 points, and then coming out when it matters the most and delivering one of their best performances in a long time was amazing to watch and I am just grateful to be a part of both these journeys.
