The MIAA B Conference track & field season got underway Tuesday afternoon with a Group Meet, at John Carroll, and three-time defending league champion Cardinal Gibbons came out on top - outscoring the host Patriots, 165-136, for the top spot. Baltimore Lutheran was third with 99-points.
Cory Robinson was a double winner for Gibbons, taking both the 100 and 200, while Antwarn Jones won the long jump and placed second in the high jump. Shelby Fisher swept the shot and discus for the Crusaders and Lorenzo Dennis also had a big afternoon, winning the triple jump, placing second in the long jump and fourth in the 110 hurdles.
John Carroll was led by Kevin Turek, who was a triple winner. Turek captured the 110 hurdles and the high jump and was on the Patriots\' victorious 4x400 relay team, along with Tim Adle, Dan Morris and Thomas Lewis. The John Carroll team of Eric Roberts, Michael Whiteleather, Nick Miller and Jonathan Clunie also won the 4x200 relay. The Patriots\' other individual winner was Mike Stetka, who took the 300 hurdles. John Carroll also finished second in the 4x800 and 4x100 relays and had seven third-place finishes.
Despite the great competition, this event does not carry any weight in the regular season standings. When the next Group Meet takes place, April 6 at Gilman, all of the teams will compete in groups of three or four and determine individual team scores against the other schools in their group. At each successive meet, the pairings will rotate, giving each school an individual competition against every other team in the conference.
