Maryland XC Weekend Rundown: The Final Invites Before Championship Season!

Gunpowder Falls Invitational

October 17, 2015 @ Gunpowder Falls State Park in Jerusalem Mill Area, MD

Meet Recap: Many of the 3A North Regional schools were present for Saturday's Gunpowder Falls Invite to preview their regional course among the 30 plus teams in attendance. However, one runner who only got one shot on the course and showed no problem navigating up front was Maryvale Prep's Emily Craig. A big winner earlier in the season at the Spiked Shoe Invite, Craig was able to distance herself enough from the Hereford duo of Sarah Coffey (2nd, 18:43) and Kelly Shearer (3rd, 18:44) in a winning time of 18:33 for a new 5K personal best.

The Hereford girls did not get a chance to race against the Dulaney varsity girls, but did get a chance to compete against their other top rival in Baltimore County in the Towson girls on Saturday. Averaging 19:38 as a squad behind their two sub 19 minute performers in Coffey and Shearer, the 2A state title favorites from Hereford (53 pts) won by 13 points over Towson (66 pts). Broadneck was not far behind in third place with 73 points.

Bel Air sophomore Kieran McDermott was a runaway winner in the boys race at the Gunpowder Falls Invite clocking a new personal best 5K time of 16:08. McDermott built a 15 second gap by the time he finished with Broadneck's Michael Weber, last week's Chaptico Invite winner, in second place with a PR time of 16:23.

Despite not running their top 6 runners, the MD #1 ranked Dulaney boys (95 pts) won the meet with essentially their "B" squad with a 39 second spread from their top 5 on this day. The Broadneck boys had two top 10 finishers with Weber and Paul Squires (8th, 16:50) to help them secure second place with 125 points.
