Contenders v. Defenders: 4A

Boys 1600/3200

2016 Winner: Rohann Asfaw (Richard Montgomery) 4:20.95 and 9:24.05

Coming off a good-but-not-great indoor season, Asfaw re-established himself as the man to beat when he opened his spring with a 9:15 3200 down at the Raleigh Relays - a good 20 seconds faster than anybody else in the classification has run. The 1600 is a bit of a different story, as his greatest threat might be his own teammate Garrett Suhr. The two matched each other almost equally in the 1600 indoors and could again this spring. Don't forget about indoor state champion Nick Boogades, either: he nearly ran down Asfaw at the state meet last year.
