Updating State Championship Meet Outlooks: Boys

3A Boys

Dalton Hengst might have stolen the show late in September at the Paul Short Invitational but Bel Air junior Kieran McDermott was not far behind him with a personal best of 15:33. After finishing fourth at the 4A state meet as a sophomore, McDermott could benefit from a move down to the 3A classification where he is the fastest returnee from last year's state championships. Behind him, Linganore's Michael Belmaggio came out on top in a showdown with North Hagerstown's Nate Neely at the CMC Championships last Friday - they will match up again at the 3A West Regionals next week. Northern's Greg Oldham, meanwhile, ran a faster time on the Boonsboro course at the Frank Keyser Invitational than Belmaggio did at the CMC Championships.

The 3A boys' team battle might be the most unpredictable at this point in the season. The C. Milton Wright boys posted some fast times at the Harford County Championships to vault them atop the team rankings, while both Westminster and Centennial have looked very good in taking down some other state contenders in invitationals this year. Both Bel Air and Linganore can also benefit from a low score and could also be in the mix, and the 3A regionals will hopefully give some better insight as to the top teams heading into the state meet.
