Week in Review: Maryland HS Indoor Track, Dec. 6 to Dec. 11

Eight different teams across Baltimore City came together for the first Baltimore City League Meet of the indoor season. The meet was hosted by Baltimore City Public Schools at the Fifth Regiment Armory.

Sprints

55 Meter Dash

Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical's Shelton Todd was victorious in the 55m event. Todd finished well below the sub-7 mark with a first-place finish and time of 6.72. The next athlete to cross the line was Baltimore Poly's Darrell White in a time of 6.98. White was the only other athlete to run under 7 seconds in the event that day. In third place, it was a battle between Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical's Kamren Vines and Edmondson-Westside's Jamari James. Both finished in a time of 7.04, but Vines walked away with the third-place title, while James was deemed fourth.

On the girls' side, Baltimore Poly's Azariah Jones took the win in a time of 7.88. Close behind her was Edmondson-Westside's Mahogany Jones in second with a time of 7.98. Both girls were the only two girls to run sub-8 in the meet. For third, it was Lake Clifton's Chayla Rivers with a time of 8.44.

300 Meter Dash

Another Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical athlete won an event. This time, it was Tyeshawn Cox in the 300m event with a time of 41.38. The next two spots both went to boys from Green Street Academy. Dayon Wilson (41.63) and Jaden Buggs (41.79) finished second and third, respectively. Cox, Wilson and Buggs were the only athletes to run under 42 seconds for the event at the meet. 

For the girls, Edmondson-Westside's Mahogany Jones made another appearance with a top 3 performance. This time, Jones won the 300m event with a time of 45.64. Behind her was Baltimore Poly's Nicole Dia in second with a time of 45.71. Jones and Dia were the only two girls to run sub-46 at the meet.

500 Meter Dash

Green Street Academy's Alfonso Reed performed well ahead of his competitors during the 500m event. Reed won the event with a time of 1:14.20, which granted him a lead of four seconds. The second-place finisher was Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical's Jaidyn Adams, a freshman. Adams finished in 1:18.11.

Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical's Dominique DeVaughn was victorious in the 500m event after a performance of 1:31.31. This was her second top 3 performance for the meet after she had previously finished third in the 300m event. Two seconds behind DeVaughn was Baltimore Poly's Miya Mese-Jones with a second-place finish and time of 1:33.26.

Distance

800 Meter Run

For the 800m event, it was a Baltimore Poly sweep. The team went 1-2-3, completely dominating the event. The first Poly athlete to cross the line was Maxwell Dixon in a time of 2:20.00. His teammate, Joshua Chiosi, was less than a second behind him, finishing second with a time of 2:20.40. The last of the three to cross the line was James Bachman, taking third in a time of 2:26.54. 

Once again, it was another Baltimore Poly sweep in the 800m event. This time, Nicole Dia led the pack with a first-place finish of 2:39.90. Dia was the only girl to break the three-minute barrier. Her teammates, Lillian Adams (3:05.6), Keileigh Mese-Jones (3:06.15) and Miya Mese-Jones (3:15.66), finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

1600 Meter Run

Baltimore Poly continued their takeover of distance events with yet another sweep. Elyjah Bassford finished first in the event with a time of 5:15.13, which was a lead of 14 seconds. His teammates, Maxwell Dixon (5:29.28), Brandon Isbell (5:41.16) and Nicholas Bader (5:52.28) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

For the girls, Baltimore Poly's Lillian Adams won the race in a time of 6:48.2, which granted her a lead of about five seconds. Her teammate, Keileigh Mese-Jones, finished behind her in a time of 6:53.97.

3200 Meter Run

Baltimore Poly's Elyjah Bassford was victorious in another event at the meet. Not only did he win the 1600m race, but he also won the 3200m race. Bassford finished first in a blistering time of 11:22.11, which granted him an astounding lead of over two minutes. His teammates, Nicholas Bader (13:06.00) and Callaway Lipkin (15:19.43), followed behind taking second and third. 

Hurdles

55 Meter Hurdles

Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical's Justin DeVaughn won the 55m hurdles event after a time of 9.11. DeVaughn was the only athlete to break the 10-second barrier mark. The next three athletes were all from Baltimore Poly: Tyrese Stanley (2nd, 10.24), Rohan Budhai (3rd, 10.66), and Caleb Streat (4th, 11.71).

Field Events

Shot Put

The Baltimore Poly boys went 1-2-3 in the shot put event, completely dominating the event. First, Tavon McGee led the team with a first-place finish and distance of 33-06.00. Next, Keith Ceruti finished close behind in second with 33-04.50. The third Poly athlete was Royel Fairfax-Byrd with a mark of 33-0.00. McGee, Ceruti and Fairfax-Byrd were the only athletes to throw over 30 feet at the meet. 

For the girls, Baltimore Poly's Jamaya McDowell was victorious with a first-place finish and mark of 26-02.25. Lake Clifton's Alexa Colbert finished second with a distance of 22-07.50, followed by Edmondson-Westside's Lanetta Wesley in third with a distance of 21-01.00. 


Team Scores

Baltimore Poly completed dominated the meet for both the boys and girls. On the boys' side, Baltimore Poly finished the meet with 191 points, which was more than double the points of the second-place team. On the girls' side, Baltimore Poly scored 92 points, which was just a little more than double the points of the next-best team.
