Week in Review: Maryland HS Indoor Track, Dec. 6 to Dec. 11

Thirteen different teams across the bayside area came together for the first Bayside League Meet of the indoor season. The meet was hosted by Bayside Conference Timing at the Worcester County Recreation Center.

Sprints

55 Meter Dash

Mardela Middle & High School's Jaden Shelton won the 55m event after an impressive time of 6.71. The second-place finisher was North Caroline's Tanner Young in a time of 6.91. Right behind Young was TaSean Dixon in third with a time of 6.92. These three athletes were some of the few that broke the seven-second barrier at the meet. 

On the girls' side, Parkside went 1-2 in the event. Alyssa Maldonado led the duo with a first-place finish and time of 7.92. Her teammate, Sanaa Murray, followed behind in second with a time of 7.98. Maldonado and Murray were the only two girls to run sub-8 in the event that day.

300 Meter Dash

James M. Bennett's Jordan Mitchell was victorious in the 300m event. Mitchell won the race in a time of 39.05, which gave him a bit of a lead. The next competitors were neck-in-neck with each other. Cambridge-South Dorchester's Evan Payne finished in second with a time of 39.52. Then, for third place, it was a tie between Kent Island's Alex Ransone and Parkside's Patrick Conteh. Both athletes finished in a time of 39.55. However, Ranson walked away with the third-place title, while Conteh was deemed fourth. 

On the girls' side, it was not as tight-knit of a race. Kent Island's Rilyn Heyliger won the event in a time of 45.38. Behind her was James M. Bennett's Brookelynne Hamer in second, finishing in a time of 46.30. The third-place finisher was Zoe Crawford from Queen Anne's County with a time of 47.26.

500 Meter Dash

For the 500m event, Kent Island's Isayah Stewart led the way with a first-place finish with a time of 1:12.86. Very close behind him was Snow Hill's Diontraye Bratten, taking second with a time of 1:12.98. In third place was another Kent Island athlete. Alex Ransone took his second top 3 performance for the meet with a third-place finish in the 500m event after a time of 1:13.94.

Kent Island's Rilyn Heyliger won another sprinting event. This time, Heylinger was victorious in the 500m event after a blistering 1:26.38, which granted her a lead of about seven seconds. Then, Parkside's Madd Phommachanh was the next to cross the finish line in a time of 1:33.26. Zoe Crawford from Queen Anne's County finished third for the second time at the meet after a performance of 1:35.66.


Distance

800 Meter Run

Stephen Decatur's Ethan Justice won the 800m race after an impressive 2:17.10. Justice was the only athlete to run under the 2:20 mark. The next two spots were close finishers to one another. Kent Island's Rajan Turner (2:20.44) and Queen Anne's County's Dylan Hurlock (2:20.75) finished second and third, respectively. 

For the girls, Kent Island's Sarah van Ornum dominated the race. She finished in a time of 2:36.32, becoming the only girl in the meet to run underneath the 2:40 and 2:50 barriers. To add, she had a lead of almost 20 seconds. Ornum is a competitive distance runner, which she proved during the 2021 cross country season. She had multiple first-place finishes, including the MPSSAA 2A East Region ChampionshipsWashington's Jamira Hutt-Robles was the next athlete to cross the line. Hutt-Robles finished in 2:54.97. Close behind was Snow Hill's Paige Etnoyer in third with a time of 2:56.76.

1600 Meter Run

A Stephen Decatur boy took another first-place win for a distance event. This time, it was athlete Tristan Dutton who was victorious with a time of 5:07.72. Behind him in second was James M. Bennett's Billy Joinville with a time of 5:09.91. The third-place finisher was Dylan Hurlock (5:11.62) from Queen Anne's County, which meant that this was Hurlock's second third-place performance of the day. 

On the girls' side, James M. Bennett's Deanna Baumann was victorious. Baumann took the race in a time of 6:07.16, which granted her a lead of over 20 seconds. The second-place finisher was Snow Hill's Paige Etnoyer in a time of 6:29.35. North Caroline's Lily Rupp finished a couple of seconds behind to take third in 6:33.65.

3200 Meter Run 

For the 3200m event, it was a tight-knit race. However, Snow Hill's Seth Barron managed to outpace his competitors for the first-place title. Barron finished first in a time of 11:00.93, just a second short of breaking the 11-minute barrier. A few seconds away was Stephen Decatur's Ethan Justice (11:03.83) who ended up winning the 800m event that same day. In third place was Kent Island's Brady Medeiros. Notably, during the 2021 cross country season, Medeiros had won the MPSSAA 2A East Region Championships.

For the girls, Kent Island's Sarah van Ornum won yet another distance event at the meet. This time, she was victorious in the 3200m event after a blistering time of 12:14.04. She had a huge lead of over a minute and was the only girl to break 13 minutes at the meet. The next athlete was James M. Bennett's Nicole Nieberding. Nieberding was the only other girl to run below the 14-minute threshold as she finished second with a time of 13:18.68. North Caroline's Lily Rupp took third for the second time that day. 

Hurdles

55 Meter Hurdles

Mardela Middle & High School's Jaden Shelton took another first-place title at the meet. After winning the 55m dash event, Shelton followed by winning the 55m hurdles event. Shelton finished with a time of 8.03, which was over a second ahead of the second-best athlete. To add, he was the only athlete to run underneath the nine-second margin. Shelton was then followed by North Caroline's Doug Cash (9.11). Washington's TaSean Dixon (9.60) finished in third place for the second time that day. Shelton, Cash and Dixon were the only athletes to run sub-10 in the event. 

Regarding the girls, James M. Bennett's Brookelynne Hamer had another top 3 performance at the meet. She finished first in the 55m hurdles event with a time of 9.29. To add, this time was a third-place finish overall. Easton's Kennedy Hayton (9.90) and Cambridge-South Dorchester's Enazajah Young (9.99) finished second and third, respectively. 

Field Events

High Jump

Mardela's Jaden Shelton proved to be a well-rounded competitor after three first-place finishes at the meet. His final first-place title came from the high jump event where he reached a height of 5-04.00. On the girls' side, Stephen Decatur's Summer Brenner was the girls' champion after reaching a height of 4-06.00. 

Pole Vault

Stephen Decatur's Owen Mielnik surpassed his competition in the pole vault event. Mielnik's pole vault mark was 13-00.00, which is currently an MD #2 for the season. Parkside's Kayla Knoll was the sole female pole vaulter, and she placed first with a height of 6-06.00. 

Shot Put

Snow Hill's Bryce Purnell had an incredible performance in the shot put event. Purnell finished first after throwing a distance of 46-00.00. This performance is currently an MD #3. North Caroline's Makayla Scharf also had a good performance after throwing 29-11.50, which is currently an MD #8. 


Team Scores

For the team scores, the Parkside girls and the Kent Island boys won the meet. The Parkside girls, led by top performances from Alyssa Maldonado, Sanaa Murray and Kayla Knoll, scored 72 points to take the win. For the boys, the Kent Island win of 83 points was secured by athletes like Isayah StewartAlex Ransone and Brady Medeiros
