1A West: Boonsboro Sweeps While Defeating Defending State Champs Smithsburg, Wright & Merritt Head To State As Favorites
Earlier in the season, Haley Wright of Boonsboro kicked off her season at the Interstate Classic on the Clear Spring High School course with an unfortunate DNF. She was back at Clear Spring on Thursday to tackle the same course, which she finished this time around as well as a minute and 5 seconds ahead of her closest competitor at the 1A West Regional in a winning time of 19:34.
Wright also helped lead the Boonsboro girls to a significant win over the defending 1A state champions from Smithsburg by a margin of 10 points. It appears that Smithsburg had one runner not finish that definitely impacted their team outcome, but certainly the 1A state team title next weekend appears to be coming down to these two Washington County programs.
The Boonsboro boys also made it a team sweep of the 1A West titles with 5 runners in the top 17 places led by a fourth place run by senior Michael Bair (4th, 17:00). Southern Garrett had a pair of runners ahead of Bair in sophomore Declan Horner (2nd, 16:54) and Devan Hamrick (3rd, 16:57) dipping under 17 minutes, but the individual regional title in a runaway victory went to Smithsburg junior Will Merritt in a time of 16:28.

Merritt appears to be in the driver seat for the 1A state title next weekend at Hereford with 3-time defending Ty Franks of Bohemia Manor being out this season due to injury.
